Ljungberg: 'Wenger has done really well with the squad he has.’

"Former Arsenal winger Freddie Ljungberg has labelled the Gunners’ season a failure and ridiculed their jubilant on-pitch celebrations for securing fourth spot in the Premier League.

Arsene Wenger’s men celebrated wildly after a 1-0 win at Newcastle earned them Champions League football next term.

But Ljungberg, who won two league titles and three FA Cups in nine years in north London, believes another trophyless season warranted more sober scenes at St James’ Park.

The now-retired Swede said: ‘I’m not too happy that they celebrated. How I see the club is different, I’m from the old school and [former coach] Pat Rice said to me if you don’t win a trophy every year it is a big failure.

‘It’s a bit different now and they have all the debt from the new stadium and we will have to see what happens this summer.’"

"But Ljungberg believes, with investment, Arsenal can end a nine-year trophy drought next term.

The 35-year-old added: ‘I think they have the foundations, but maybe they need to get some very good players to spice it up a little bit.

‘It’s hard for any team if you let your best players go every year. It’s not even possible to compete to win then and Arsene Wenger has done really well with the squad he has.’"

I totally agree with Ljungberg on this one, Ljungberg's latest remarks highlight the level ignorance among some of the people who post on this site.

    • I have to say that I don't agree with you and Ljungberg. There was nothing wrong with celebrating the 4th place finish. Sure when Freddie played we were at a level in the game with the type of players who could expect to win something but we have not been at that level for 8 years IMO. As such CL football is worth a celebration for a team like ours and after a start of the season like ours.
Not qualifying for CL football would have been a small disaster and I think you fail to realize that if you agree with Freddie's criticism for our lads celebrating.

      I know I celebrated.

    • I'm sorry...I'm sure you read this article before you "copy and pasted"...as you so often copy and paste...but I'm not quite sure what leads you to your concluding statement...?

...I mean...Wigan did really well with the squad they had...despite relegation...FA Cup and all that...:)

...Arsenal hung onto 4th place by their fingertips....in spite of the squad Wenger gave them....which seems to be the gist of this article...

...I'm not sure what point you were trying to make...would you please elucidate...?

Then again, what does Freddie know, he only won two League Titles and three FA Cups with us?

      LOL

    • Do you agree with all of Ljungberg's remarks or just some of them?

Do you not think that if Wenger had actually won the odd trophy in the last 8 years that his best players would not have left? It's Wenger's failings that have you in this catch 22 position.
