Spencer: Time for Rooney and United to go separate ways

Manchester Evening News sports editor Peter Spencer says David Moyes should sell Wayne Rooney and avoid anything overshadowing the beginning of his tenure at Old Trafford.

The England striker has been linked with several clubs throughout the summer, including Arsenal, after being usurped as the main man at the Reds by Robin van Persie and Spencer says the time is right for both parties to part ways.

"You wonder whether Moyes wants a potential problem at the start of his career when he can have a clean break," he told Sunday Exclusive.

"It kind of suits both parties for a parting of the ways. United won’t want to pay him the same [as his last contract] because he’s not the main man. United would be able to cash in now with two years left on his contract.

"From Rooney's view he may think his career would benefit from a move. It might just be it sparks his career a bit if he gets into a team where he plays his best."

The journalist added the former Everton boss would refuse to sell to a title rival such as Chelsea leaving Arsenal as genuine contenders and Bayern Munich a possibility if they miss out on Robert Lewandowski.

The sports editor also claims signing Everton left-back Leighton Baines would represent a brilliant acquisition after United had a reported £12 million bid turned down.

He said: "He’s a total class act. He’ll come to United for two reasons. For Champions League football and the chance to overtake Ashley Cole in the England team just in time for the World Cup."

Full interview by Spencer is currently on Talksport.

Just to repeat for [fake] Gunner and Rikki........"The journalist added the former Everton boss would refuse to sell to a title rival such as Chelsea leaving Arsenal as genuine contenders and Bayern Munich a possibility if they miss out on Robert Lewandowski." CLEAR favourites for Rooney's signature: ARSENAL .

    • Heres the problem Slayer - Rooney wants to play for Barca, and has probably very little interest in playing for your mediocre bunch of perennial 4th placers!

He's ambitious Im afraid, more ambitious that Fergie apparently! I dont think hell be in a rush to join you even if you did match his wages! And he does love his wages!

No, you're not favourites. If its between you and staying with us, he'll stay, I assure you son!

    • "title rival" -so you seem happy that Arsenal has been dismissed as a title rival? Hardly the sort of team Rooney would want to go to then?

It's hilarious to see Slayer wetting himself over Rooney considering the bile he's been spewing about him for the last few years.

      • Peter is perfectly entitled to his own opinion, Rikk.

*wetting himself over Rooney*?................. Don't be silly Rikk!

Back to the topic. Have you listened to the whole interview? What do you make of Peter's remarks? Do you think that it's time for Man U to draw a line on it and grant Rooney is wish to leave? I think the rumours won't go away and there's a risk that it could overshadow Man U's pre-season preparation. Being an Arsenal fan, I'd be happy if that's the case for obvious reasons.
