Personally think he'll split time with Alonso. Most likely he'll play more games away from home where Rafa likes to be a bit more conservative. Alonso is much more of the play maker and is always a threat for a long range shot. While he will track back, Mascherano is far more superier in the defensive midfielder role that Alonso.
while Momo seems be have worked hard and impressed over teh last few exhibition games right now I'd say the order to play along side Stevie are: 1- Alonso, 2- Mascherano, 3, Momo.
i've seen xabi and javier play together more often than not, i wonder if rafa will change his philosophy this season
these are our 9 midfielders (am i forgetting anyone?):
probably the best midline in the EPL

I believe we will see a lot of the 4-5-1 formation with Gerrard playing behind a lone striker. Mascherano and Alonso playing the holding roles, some combination of Kewell/Babel/Pennant/Benayoun on the wings. In matches that are tied or in which we trail, Masch comes off at the hour mark for the second striker.
