Well Roy has signalled that left back is our no.1 priority although I think we all knew that. It seems that we may well just be buying the one left back and using the excellent young Kelly as back up even though its not his preferred position. Its no bad thing, Carra learned his trade out there as well. So who do you want?, here are some of the candidates:
Maynor Figuerroa - seems to be the hot tip, all I remember is that free kick from his own half. At least he is proven at Wigan in the prem - £5-8m
Wayne Bridge - may find himself surplus to requirements with Citys impending purchase of Kolarov. English, premiership winner, has chemistry with Cole and Johnson although he can get caught out - £6-9m
Fabio Coentrao - 'He is currently targeted by Liverpool FC and is said to be keen on the transfer as it would guarantee him first team football for a great club'. Thats the Wikipedia statement and what a good World Cup he had. £12-15m
Stephen Warnock - Former red, should never have been sold but Martin O'Neil would not make it easy - £6-8m
John Arne Riise - Liverpool legend and another terrible Rafa sale. One bad season and he wasnt deemed good enough for the squad. Far and away the best left back we have had in the last decade - £4-6m
Taye Taiwo - Marseille and Nigeria full back in the mould of Ginger John. Lost his place to Gabriel Heinze last season but OM do not want to sell - £10-12m
Danijel Pranjić - Bayern Munich utility man, primarily a winger but has played full back for club and country - £4-6m
Seemingly Bridge ain't for sale so what bout this guy as stated in earlier reply, as for the players mentioned in the last passage in my opinion, no thanks:
Liverpool are being linked with versatile German international Marcell Jansen as manager Roy Hodgson continues his search for a new starting left-back.
The 24-year-old has played in several positions during a career that has been solely in the Bundesliga so far, and is employed as a midfielder as much as a defender by current club Hamburg.
But Hodgson, who has extensive connections throughout the central European domestic leagues, is thought to have been tipped off that Jansen would welcome a regular role in defence - and is keen on joining Liverpool.
Jansen's capture could also help to allay the lingering fears of some of the Anfield faithful that there is a distinct lack of quality back-up to Inter Milan-bound defensive midfielder Javier Mascherano.
Hodgson has already been linked with Chelsea's Ashley Cole and former Spurs defender Reto Ziegler as he steps up his search for more left-sided players.
No mate I dont think hes a left back at all. What I was implying is he is unlikely to be playing a lot yet at centre half unless he is really 'that' good so I wouldnt be suprised, being a lefty, him gaining some time as back up to whoever the new left back will be.
Danny Wilson is amazing, that's true. One of the best young centre backs in Europe.
For left back, there are plenty of good cheap full backs like Ivan Strinic who would be only around 2M, Marcell Jansen who was already mentioned, Alvaro Perreira the Urugay left back and Emannuelson from Ajax.
I hope you don't mean he's a LB mate, because he's far from it. Spoke to a mate who's a Rangers season ticket holder last night and here's what he said:
"You have signed here the most promising centre half to come out of Scotland since the days of Willie Miller, Alan Hansen, Colin Hendry, Alex McLeish. He's a young lad who will only improve as years go on, his potential is frightening already when you think of the level he's already at. Not only is he a brilliant ball playing defender he can mix it up aswell and for a big lad he is deceptively quick. You have got a bargain here mate".
I have to agree with you there. I think we will buy just the one left back. Wilson is a lefty and it seems sensible to blood him in out there. I hope we get a really decent left back and not a stop gap of sorts.
danny wilson is left footed so maybe he is being seen as a possible left back, much in the same way carra was in his early career but we do need to get someone in soon just to gel with the rest of the defense or the season could start badly considering the level of opposition in the first few games
As I said in an earlier thread, I want the Hamburg LB, Marcel Jansen. We could get him for about 5 mil and at 22, he already has WC and European Championship experience. I dont want Figueroa Konchesky, they're not good enough for us.
