Got to agree with you here Andrew. I know the argument that Torres is a great player just going through a purple patch, but its one heck of a long dry spell. Remember he was not exactly firing on all cylinders with us last term, has not hit any kind of form with Chelsea, so really has been underachieving for more than a season and a half.
In fact if anyone was to use the "form is temporary while class is permanent argument, then surely the same could be said about Carroll. If Torre's poor form of 18 months is temporary, then since Carroll was firing well with Newcastle before his injury last season (and the season before) then his so called dry patch would look like nothing more than a blip.
While being realistic as others have already said this is highly unlikely to happen as I doubt Chelsea would sell. While Roman may have money to waste I doubt his ego would allow him to effectively pass us 30M. Besides I think unless Chelsea have another striker already lined up to arrive in January, or they have huge faith that Sturridge can be consistent as a lone striker, I think they are looking for Torres to step up in the new year while Drogba is away at the African Cup of Nations.
But it maybe a non starter from our side also. Kenny has made it quite clear that he only wants players who want to be with the club. Personally I would have liked us to keep Meireles, but it seems obvious that as soon as the club knew he wanted a move it was better to cut bait. Its exactly the same with Torres.
Lastly I don't think the so called Suarez/Torres partnership would bear much fruit, even if Torres was to figure out where the goal was. Torres is a needy player who while on form is one of the best natural finishers in the game, needs quality service, and 9 players behind him supporting him. It worked well when Torres had Gerrard or Alonso behind him laying on perfect balls for him to latch onto, and I do think Torres would benefit working with Adam, I don't see looking at playing style a natural collaboration between Luis and Fernando.
