"Playmaker Cesc Fabregas perhaps unwittingly put his finger on the crux of the problem in remarks to reporters after Tuesday's reverse.
"We played a good match, we dominated and we created a lot of chances," the former Arsenal captain said. "We were the same Barca as always."
Barcelona 2 Chelsea 3
I think so!! Chelsea countered their pass and move style all too easily. Perhaps we can learn a lesson there?
How about this then for sounding very familiar:
"Logic dictated that Guardiola would be replaced by a ‘club’ man, someone with Barcelona blood in his veins and strong knowledge of the inner workings of the club. That has been the 'boot room' tradition, and it continues to be thus."
Doesn't that sound just like a club we all love?
Thing is Barca may play like us in style.. but they've a huge difference in class of player to us and also have much better quality of depth in their squad compared to us..
As Ajay says Barca play through the middle. Their width comes from the full backs and they're there to purely stretch the defensive line and open gaps between defenders for short passes between defenders and the defensive lines to exploit. Chelsea to their credit didn't allow this. They defended narrow and deep forcing Barca to cross from out wide into a packed area. Chelsea gambled that they had the strength and height to deal with it. They did. Count how many times Alves tried to cross it but he hardly ever got behind the Chelsea defense and turned them. The game also highlighted to me why Barca may have an interest in Bale. Alves on the right, Bale on the left as a attacking full back.
We and for that matter any English side are decades behind reaching the technical level the Barca are at plus as Chelsea proved if you are big, fit and organised it can be countered so you need a blend in the PL. A bit Bayern I guess. It seems that they have their own version of Carroll in Gomes. I wasn't hugely impressed with him either to be honest but to their credit they have power, pace and ability.
Personally though, if we could get somewhere near the playing style and ability of Bilbao we'd be doing very well indeed. I've been impressed with them and really enjoyed watching their Europa league games this season.
Yess we all learned a lesson there !! That is if any of our players have a HOT Missus, leave her at home and John Terry will definately get himself red carded on purpouse just like he did yesterday because Shakira was home alone while Pique was on the pitch!

Good points guys. Particularly agree with the Alves comment. He only once crossed from behind - think it was Ashley Cole - the whole second half, instead of going round him to the bye line and putting in a non offside producing ball. Shows the premier League is a different proposition where aerial domination in the box is a key weapon against big defenders.
Your right it's a major deficit but not one that really shows up in La Liga games which is why I'd not advocate a carbon copy for the prem where physical presence including height is more impo.
You're on the right track.
The fact is that Barca rely on attacking through the middle, rarely from down the line.
That is their only way of attacking, they are a one trick pony.
If they could attack from out wide and put in the occasional cross as part of a plan b then they might have actually caused Chelsea some real pain. Down to 10 men the last thing you need is the opposition pulling your defenders out wide, creating gaps in the middle for someone to come in and bury a good cross.
Barca had two great headers of the ball in Puyol (short as he is, probably one of the best timers of a jump in the game) and Pique (until he went off) so had the weapons but just didn't know how to use them effectively. Go wide and cross is just not the Barca way of playing and that is why Chelsea could hold on and eventually go on to win.
Your right and add the scratches to the Barca woodwork and maybe there is some things in common. But to be fair Chelsea played out of their sock, and while most know how to counter Barca not many have the ability and organization to actually do it. Hats off to Chelsea for that.
But the comparisons to us are a bit silly. I maybe red through and through but we're not in Barca's league yet. But then again we have beaten Chelsea twice already this term.
