What (Who) would you like for Xmas ? - letters to J Henry

    J Henry :

“The FA Cup would not have made any difference had he won it,” said Henry. “For us we were 17th over the second half of the season and Liverpool should not be in that position. I don’t place the blame on Kenny and Steve (Clarke) – but I think it was obvious to every Liverpool fan that something was wrong and something needed to be done."

..as we are 10 games away from a similar milestone (the Villa game on 15th Dec) I have been optimistic and reckon we may get another 10 points by then - this could be around the 14th to 17th mark.

Who do you think we should go for then?

    • Why not offer Saurez for Ballotelli + cash..

    • All valid points...but I meant manager-wise....surely if the yanks are consistent we want to be finishing higher than 8th and reach two cup finals. If last season was an abject failure then I hope they recruit a top manager rather than a 'cheap', up and coming, mid-table one....or am I just being mischievous

      • OldBill if we swap manager again we'll be as bad as Chelsea.. Who change their manager every 5 mins..

      • You can save this in quotes from me and throw it back in my face if I'm wrong, excluding the scenario we are sitting 18th or close to that area by January, that BR will never get sacked this season and be our manager for next season as well..

They've implemented and followed a model they planned, and did in Boston (please ignore the baseball/football analogies) in an overall grand scheme of things and chosen a man, manager they wanted to bring in a style and type of football..

So far, while I think everyone would agree we should feel hard done with at least 2 results and have 4-6 points more, and we'd all feel better when looking at the table, but that aside, I think it's impossible to ignore in what we see tactically that's changed, in addition to rapid improvement each week along with the confidence/believe in the youngsters - Sterling Suso Shelvey

That said, since I don't think we'll be having a discussion about BR come January or at all this season (hold me accountable for my words here), also because we'd have to find another manager to have the same principles or things would only worsen, transfer / player wise, I think it should be Llorente first and foremost, certainly well ahead of Huntelaar, and then a real go for Leandro Dimaio who by many accounts was close to leaving in August and said to be strongly so in January..

Aside from that, I think we are actually ok at left back with the rise of Wisdom taking over RB, and having Glen do a decent job there, and Robinson as well, while waiting for Enrique to heal (or stop playing playstation and tweeting about it). So I think we need to look at another wide front attacker, like we thought we were in for with Gaston Ramirez or perhaps Tello. I think Downing will go, Cole can't go fast enough, and while Suso and Sterling have been extremely impressive, we need more competition there, as well as quality and depth..

That said, I'd have a look again at Tello, perhaps his situation will change by then since Villa is back and in Barca's plans. And then somone like Isco, Munain, Mertens (watch for that name, he's amazing for PSV) or plenty of others... I'll have to do my hw and find more names there...

For me, Llorente, Dimaio, and then a hybrid winger/striker.. then a discussion over a defender for LB or more depth for Carra/Coates..

I'm sure BR knows who he wants by know, and has people scouting, but it's important to get the best from what he has, and who knows, come January, both Sterling and Suso could have multiple goals and assists, as well as Assaidi, and we just need a striker and that's all... Time will tell..

      • I somehow doubt they'll dump Rodgers just yet.. As it'll mean spending more money on paying someone off and paying for annew manger.. When that money could be used to buy players..

I hope he gets at least another season..

    • Who we should go for and who we will get are 2 different things. We need at the very least a forward (LF,RF,ST whatever) and a left back to at the very least compete down that side.
We have to at least attempt to sign Llorente or Huntelaar who are in the last few months of their contracts, if that cant happen then move along. I dont really want to think much furthur then that to be honest as they should be going for one of those, no question for me.

The left back situation is much tougher, I dont really know whether we should be looking at a) competition for the elusive Enrique b) buy a young emerging talent or c)bring in an experienced player to do a job. I would still have Riise back!

      • I agree. An out and out central striker and finisher for me, perhaps two! A player who leads the line. If papers are to be believed then I think we've already started making enquiries about Llorente who is that type of player and has been prefabricated for the PL. It's a long shot sadly but you never know and I can't understand how Bilbao have found themselves in this position with him.

A left back also seems logical.

Here's a biggy though. Who and will we be able to move players on? Cole for one and I suspect that Enrique and Downing may also be on the exit path. Would anyone be interested?

    • A proven finisher.

However they'd cost money, and much of it would depend on our league position, when the time comes to sign.
