    What's Going On?

As the late great Marvin Gaye said ‘What’s going on?’ Benitez, Dalglish & Rodgers all have one major ‘talent’ in common... they have all paid BIG money for a lot of average players.

    Rafa:

    Aqualani £20 odd million
    Keane £20 odd million
    Pennent £8.5 million
    Kuyt £10 million
    Babel £13 million
Aurileo & Gonzalez (not big money but rafa did say ‘these 2 will light up the Premier League’)

    Kenny:

    Carroll £35 million
    Downing £16 million
    Henderson £20 million
    Cole £free (but oh dear!)

    Brenden:

    Borini £10 million
    Allen £16 million

All 3 managers did make some good signings but has another club spent this much money in the last few years on so many average players? (apart from QPR maybe!) and more importantly Why/How did they all get it so wrong?

Any thoughts would be well received because I am out of excuses and ideas! Not to mention damn frustrated!

(Any mistakes here are down to the 5 pints of Guinness I have consumed; I find it helps dull the pain!)

    • Sadly you missed a few more off the Rafa list. Morientes, Degen, and a certain Italian fullback who nearly reached cult status as a couple of extra examples

You also forgot Hodgson who bought Konchesky, Poulsen and Cole I believe.

There was definitely something broken with our transfer policy and it's been that way fo years and years.

I actually think this year is better, mainly because the purchases make a bit more sense but I agree Borini and Allen are struggling. Borini I'm not sure about but to me there's something about Allen that makes him worth keeping for the moment.

      • Hi Noo Noo

You missed a few of the Rafa list:-

Xabi Alonso, Luis Garcia, Pepe Reina, Daniel Agger, Alvaro Arbeloa, Fernando Torres, Javier Mascherano, Lucas, Martin Skrtel, Glen Johnson, Martin Kelly, Raheem Sterling, Suso. Obviously he was also the one the converted JC into one of the best centre backs in the country.

My point being that I'll happily put up with a manager signing dross if he can also pull out a side capable of competing with anyone in the world which is what we had only 5 years ago.

"I actually think this year is better"

I know you're a big BR fan but I'd ask how many of our best XI come from Benitez/Dalglish signings? Count them up, you'll be surprised. BR's summer signings were conspicuous by their absence last night - Allen was awful again, Borini rightly got nowhere near the park and we haven't heard much from Assaidi for quite a while. Nuri Sahin has picked up his wages and left and, before anyone points to Dan Sturridge, I remind people of the post I put up back in October - the reports at that time suggested it was BR that pulled the plug on Sturridge moving to us in the summer.

        How is this year better?

Don't get me wrong, I think Allen in particular may come good and understand that BR is inexperienced and may improve in spotting what he wants to bring in. It's just that I don't think it's right to criticise other managers and then praise BR's signing record when the truth in front of us doesn't bear it out.

Hope you don't mind me disagreeing with you on this point.

    • Kozma - didn't he sign in '92?

Surely even his worst enemy couldn't blame Rafa for that one!

      :-)

    • Kozma was a Souness buy. You mentioned Walters that's why I thought of him.

      The pony-tailed one! forgot him.

    • If you want my honest answer, if I personally would want any of them, yes absolutely!

      - Ashley Williams
      - Nathan Dyer
      - (if we had a chance) Scott Sinclair 10 times over and over
      - Vorm
      - And, regards to Gylfi, he's done little, but Spurs also added Dembele and Dempsey who play the same role as off the striker attackers. Based on what he did as a regular for Swansea and when available in the summer I'm sure everyone was happy with the idea, and it would have actually prevented us buying Allen most likely.. And, we have no idea how well he may have linked up playing off Suarez in between Gerrard/Lucas..

All of these players had about 2 years under their belts in Rodgers system (ours have only 7 months!) and Laudrup is playing the exact same way, with a slight tweak in how he uses Michu..

My thing is, not every player has to be a BIG name player or come from a BIG club to be good enough for LFC. Blackpool aren't really big in Europe and we all desperately want Tom Ince back.. And again, if given the choice, Scott Sinclair would have been a superb signing considering Downing and Sterling are our main wide attackers, and Downing as good as he ever will be, Sterling just 18.. Coutinho is really going to push them both, this season and next!
