Article in the Daily Mail, rpeated on this website says Gareth Southgate is to turn his attention to the defence in trainign this week. I would have hoped Southgate would have been turning his attention to the defence long before now, given the number of matches we have lost by giving away goals in the final ten to fifteen minutes. He might also consider giving Downing a spell on the bench as he clearly is out of sorts due to the stick he has received over his recent England performances or the forthcoming court case against his agent which surely must be on his mind. I was at the Riverside on Saturday and was astounded to see Downing playing in the back four for at least the last 20 minutes. Give Adam Johnson a few games whilst keeping Downing in reserve for the final fifteen or so minutes to keep the opposition's defence occupied so much their team mates won't be able to even think about scoring. Also Gareth, why not play Alves, Mido and Aliadière a run out in the reserves against Sunderland Tuesday evening so they can get some shooting practise and some confidence.
