    It's ALL in the mind!

I think Wenger faces an extremely tough task. Hopefully an FA cup win will help. It will certainly put an end to the trophyless period and the constant reminder of that.
You never know, if Ozil starts brightly next season, if that supposed new striker is found, or if the ones we have really begin to shine, if more moral boosting signings are made, producing another Ozil effect, if Wenger is still in charge, perhaps Arsenal will enjoy real success. Perhaps Arsenes Arsenal will finally reach the dizzying heights, invincible like, again.

This season promised so much. I think Wenger was a hairs breadth away from realising every Gooners dreams myself. All the lack of tactical nuance is over rated IMO. Arsenal beat Barca and Fergusons United when they were flying, all those years ago. Tacticians were around then too, i believe.

I don't dissagree that more depth to the squad would be welcome, however, if the team had enjoyed more luck, injury wise, those points would barely be raised. Obvious i know, but, take Lpool for example, if Gerard was out for most of the season, crucially, towards the end say, and Suarez too, were would Lpool now? Certainly not atop the Prem and no doubt, questions would be raised about there lack of quality in depth too. Wenger has tried to sign strikers, that is well documented, none of the quality needed have been either available, able, or willing to sign. Top quality strikers are few and far between and every club wishes to sign the same guys. Arsenal were also unlucky that Sanogo was injured so early on. The guy looks promising, and who knows what he would have achieved if he too enjoyed better health. Perhaps the need for a striker question would also have fallen away.

    Hi Rikk...

    I'm here...he's here...posting "personal information"...

...I'm not here...he's sending mail...and searching for me on the internet...;D...classic stalking traits...

...I guess he's forgotten about how he killed Crime with his constant stalking of me..

...his little heart must have almost burst out of his untrimmed chest when he saw that I'd made a post....because that's not all that turned up in the wee small hours of this morning....

...within an hour of Kipper posting...(I guess he was working a late shift)...more "junk emails" went out from "my" account...stopped by the spam filter...and I'm still getting junk adverts as I type...I guess we know who the "virus" is now...:(

...but Kipper is right in one respect...I really should respond to Drummer...(do you remember when Kipper called me "Janice"...?...that was when I knew Drummer had not only told him I was "Jan" ...but he had fed him details from my contacts list generated by the virus....not that Drummer admitted to that or said sorry)...anyway...Drummer needs to know that he gave Kipper my sister's name and work email....

....if you're looking in Drummer....which I suspect you are...you still don't know my name...but thanks for exposing my sister's details to Kipper's tender mercies....even after I told you he was a stalker....and I didn't reply because your "apology" was self serving and full of omissions and downright lies....

...because there's only one way that Kipper knew all this stuff...including the fact you'd "apologised" and I hadn't responded...?...you said you didn't correspond with him personally...that he was only on your "funnies" mailing list...out and out lie...:(

...you said you were ashamed Drummer...as you should be...then you lied and gave all the excuses under the sun....

....Kipper...?....that's how you daubed Drummer as a liar...and I'm done with both of you...you're two ineffectual little men with no life and grasp of the line between "virtual" and "reality"...

If you had to answer the question about whether or not Wenger can instill the confidence needed in the team for future glory, how would you answer it today based on the recent history, be it this season or the last few seasons?

I think Arsenal lack depth on the wings and in the striker position. Across the back 4 and for the central midfield positions we have enough depth if you ask me, although naturally there is always room for improvement.

    "The fact is, he isn't."

    You have proof of this?

    .

All this 'confidence #$%$, Midget, is just that, #$%$

The FACT is, Arsenal has no quality strength in depth, you've got a decent team, with a couple of decent reserves, and that's it.

Add that to a manager with little understanding of changing tactics during the game, and you have the perfect recipe for failure.

Wenger has shown in the past that he is prepared to listen to other members regarding playing style etc. Tony Adams has told the story of Wenger wishing to change the defensive style in his early days at Arsenal only for Adams to ask why a winning formula should be changed. Wenger listened and things stayed as they were. Wenger certainly is not solely in charge of transfer dealings, sure, he may have the last say in who he wants brought in, but that does not mean he is the sole person dealing with the activity. The fact is, he isn't.

I totally agree that the manager is responsible for the frame of mind of the players. Wenger has said he kept Ramsey back from playing in games in front of the Emirates crowd because of the negative attitude towards Aaron. I think half the reason Wenger moved on many players in the past had more to do with the mindset of the players, and indeed that of the fans, than with the ability of the players. I think Arsenal have suffered greatly through the weight of expectation since the move to the Emirates. The Invincibles reached a level that was hard to reciprocate. I always have thought that the teams Wenger gave us, with Fabregas, Van Persie, Diaby, Nasri, Arshavin, Flamini, Adebayor etc, were quality. Unfortunately injury hampered those squads hugely and the move to the Emirates also weighed. The years went by without trophies, the unrest grew, the negative psychological feelings took root. This has been Wengers undoing of late IMO. The press and pundits predicted the downfall of Arsenal from day one. Is it any wonder that the Arsenal lads suffered psychologically? The Lpool man says in the interview he believes confidence is crucially affected when only 5% unstable.

Confidence is hard gained, and easily lost. The argument for Wenger calling an end to his career, to me, cocerns one point only. Can Wenger instill the confidence needed in the team for future glory, or not.

Interesting article. It shows, to me, and as John eluded to, in modern day football the manager can't do it all alone. I wonder how many brain storming sessions Wenger has with his "management team". Clearly Brendan Rodgers has done quite some brainstorming with Peters and the rest of his team. I have the feeling (that is all it is because press gossip is hard to take too seriously) Wenger is more of the old school lone ruler.

In the final analysis the manager is responsible for the frame of mind of the team, weather he delegates the care for the psyche to an expert like Rodgers did, of weather he wants to take that responsibility himself. The same goes for the fitness of the team and for the the training. We all know SAF was not involved much with training but that didn't stop him from winning many trophies.

I think in modern day football managers need to act more like CEO's and leave each area of football to experts in that field. The manager should evaluate the performance of the guys that help him manage the team and of the players. The manager should determine the tactics for each game and safeguard the general playing style and philosophy as well as the team composition. If he wants to get involved and control all aspects himself on a day-to-day basis, I believe he will be spread too thin.

Maybe this is part of the reason we appear so slow and indecisive in the transfer market. It seems nearly impossible to plan a pre-season, work with the players, and be in charge of the transfer dealings.

But no argument from me about top sport being largely in the mind.
