Tough call isn't it. Thing is Rodgers has made some subtle little changes to the midfield to suit the opposition and it's worked with a bedrock of a consistent defensive line up with Gerrard just in front. (bar the few leaked goals that is) The front players and other midfielders have adapted and adopted these subtle changes really well.
In truth I've no idea what he'll do................
I think I'd be tempted to go with Allen as well. He's better than Lucas full stop and keeps the ball better than Coutinho. That I think is the best way of ensuring that we have a fair share of the ball.
The alternative is to concede possession and try to get them on the break. In that instance Coutinho may be the better option.
The other option is to play Sterling in the hole and pack that midfield with Allen or Lucas. That might be the way we go on this. It's a subtle difference but a formation that Rodgers has gone with recently.
Just a little pin prick, there'll be no no more
Head down and enjoying it at the moment Jason. Big game this weekend, crossing fingers, toes, legs anything.
I will say that I've been incredibly impressed with Rodgers. He's been calm, straight and solid. There's no rants or pops at other managers or even talking about other teams / sides. It's all about the team striving to deliver on the field.
Sadly one idiot we had managing us couldn't do that and should take a leaf out of Rodgers book.
The yellow card amnesty kicks in on April 13th. Two game ban before then and I don't think we can afford to lose him for the City game which is on the 13th.
So as it stands it's tread lightly or we'll be doing City a favour I think.
Harsh but I don't see Lucas much more than a squad player to be honest. I'd put all of our other midfielders in before him right now. One major concern is that Gerrard is on 9 yellow cards at the moment. One more and he gets a ban which will mean a midfield change and that's always been an area, particularly in the defensive area that worries me.
Well I see that Spurs have been sniffing Konoplayanka now. Dear me. Can we call them Liverpool B now?
I have wondered if Ayres has been restricted a bit by FSG. They have given him a top budget for a player (and agent) and when it goes over the deal gets stuck. I'm just playing devils advocate here and wondering if Ayre is only doing what he's told and within the agreed or set budget.
yes teams will strengthen but I think those in the CL next year will start to stretch away even further. The new TV deal really adds some financial welly to those clubs in there and it will be a real toil to clubs outside trying to get in. Hence my giggles at United although they will still have enough financial power to rock the boat.
Of course take your eye off the ball and you'll lose out as always. we do agree that we really need to be on the ball this window however. We can't afford expensive bench warmers and we seriously need the bodies.
Must admit I was never a fan of Tomkins. He was Rafa's personal press officer and had been completely brainwashed by him.
Fair points in your post Jason. I would certainly like to know what's going on around the negotiation table. Are playing too much hard ball for example? Perhaps there's more to it or FSG would still tolerate Ayre but I don't know.
I think the draw of CL football will be a massive help, if we get there of course. I'm more concerned about the money side. We need a fair bit of strengthening and it wont come cheap.
The transfer window raises an interesting point Paddy. Firstly I agree that the squad needs more. Johnson has been pants in my opinion but there's also a whole lot of other things to address to provide a squad that can play in both the PL and CL.
My question is how can we afford this? In a week where the financial results weren't what I'd call 100% comforting and FFP on the horizon then I don't thinks it's a case of going all out. We simply can't afford that.
I'm also aware that when BT Sport start to venture into televising the CL fixtures that revenue per club will jump up again from £30m to around £60m (I may be completely wrong here) but that's a start but I think we'll need more.
Good stuff Jason
So we're 23-9-6 which I make 78 points. Still a touch behind the others (I make Chelsea 845 pts By the way) but still pleased as punch.
Good place to be right now.
Stupid international break........................................
Pretty much summed it up there Jason. I want the Mancs to realise how difficult it is to get back up to the top. A few years in mid table, where they belong will be fantastic.
I actually hope they go into terminal decline as a side. As we did we fell out of Europe and then it becomes extremely hard to get back. I hope they suffer the same and that it's at least 10 years before they get near a title again.
What goes around comes around
Wasn't expecting that but it's what happened later with Benitez that went all wrong. Hope Rodgers continues as he has done. need to sure up that defense a bit though.
Part of Webb's problem is his Fergie sized ego. I can guess where he got it from too.
Clattenberg isn't popular here, especially at Southampton. Dowd seems ok to me.
Truth is that Webb believes he's bigger than the game being played and that's not right. The same can be said for many a player too. Referees, when doing their job well should be anonymous. Webb feels he needs to be at the forefront of everything.
It also doesn't help that there is little respect for them and the rules simply don't help the referee. It's one of the very few games where it's a benefit to show that you've been injured. In many other games it's taken as a sign of weakness. In football it's used to get an advantage.
Pretty poor wasn't it? Not much I can say other than I feel like I've been burgled and everyone in the street saw it happen
Let him keep talking and say nothing in return. One game at a time and go for the win every time.
But just stay quiet. Rafa opened his gob and blew it. Nothing frustrates "the mouth" more than not having any fuel to feed off. Don't give him and ounce.
Some good points Jason.
I do care about the Arsenal game for two reasons. Our upward momentum and Arsenal's downward momentum. I'd like to see us win every game and put real pressure on those above us. Arsenal in my mind will crack and that relieves the pressure currently below us. It's not as if we are stretched in the fixture list. But I do agree that the ultimate prize is CL football. I'd be gutted to lose out on that now due to a stupid lack of focus. I want to see us build confidence to the point of arrogance where people are nervous about facing us.
Kolo, I agree isn't quite at the races at the moment. Problem is that Agger makes me nervous. He has all the attributes but seems to go to sleep. Where is Sakho recovering at the moment. He looked first choice before getting injured and seemed to be coming along.
Good to see a debutante last night. I cant spell his name but i've seen him in the U21's and caught my eye straight away. He's got a bit of quality that stands out.
Again the post super win bug struck again and we nearly came a cropper last night against a spirited Fulham side. It's something we really need to shake off and develop some real grit in the side so that we can win ugly and have no fear of these awkward away games. These will be a our future key to success, Our home form is currently excellent and long may it continue.
As I said some real grit and muscle needed to make these games at little easier.
Got to agree guys. On our day It seems we can give everyone in the UK a good game and even beat them. However we then have this really annoying habit of tripping up every time we get given an opportunity to make ourselves more comfortable. West Brom. being my case in point.
My point being that we are only 3 points clear of Tottenham and I'd seriously not want to lose out on 4th, having given them a hiding but having poor results elsewhere simply because we weren't switched on.
