    On loan at least...

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/21477227

What a pity his move to us has been. He had quite a career ahead of him before that, and his first half season for us was a good'un.

Thanks for the memories (by which I mainly mean THAT Arsenal goal).

I tell you what, I heard AVB on the radio a few weeks back and thought he sounded so clear, much clearer than on telly - maybe it's something about looking at him that makes him difficult to hear!

    (it's 1-0 against MU's U21s at nearly half time)

Miles, Byrne, Fryers, Livermore, Naughton, Luongo, Parrett, Carroll, Obika, Kane, Ceballos.

That's our U21s starting line up today. By my reckoning 7 of the have at least made the first team bench, and have a real mix of experience levels within that - it much be invaluable to the Luongo's and Obika's to learn from the experience of the Livermore's & Naughton's.

I know at the moment we're seeing a whole lot of gaps in our first team, but this line up gives me faith in the investment in the club's future and that the process of academy through to first team is being carefully managed.

    Thoughts, anyone?

Will Bale succumb to the media hype?

Oooh, forgot Holtby... he's looking good so I'd like him to get a run, not sure where his best place is yet... he's got the kind of gung ho attitude that makes me think he could give pretty much an position a crack, perhaps taking Dempsey's place in the first line up & Gylfi's in the second?

We've all been talking about St Gareth of Bale a lot recently, and I think I've started to come round. In an ideal world I think I would prefer him to have a strict manager who keeps him firmly on the wing with his main purpose being provider, but that's not what's happening at the moment and while he's got his goal boots on we might as well take advantage of it.

That said, while he's going for individual gold at every opportunity he is not fulling the function of a winger, and so shouldn't be playing in one of the team's 'provider' positions. I'd preferably put him at AM rather than 2nd striker, but either of those would do - realistically it means taking the place of Dempsey or Dembele, gut says Demspey but formation says Dembele.

so an attacking line up of (on current fitness):
    Sigurdsson-Parker (I prefer him to Sandro, but it's close)-Bale-Lennon
    Dempsey?-Ade

Or - once Defoe's back this may work:

    Sig-Parker-Dembele-Lennon
    Bale
    Defoe

Long term he should move back to wing for sure, but for now let's put him in the position he's playing instead of congesting the team.

    Adebayor back to a fine?

I think there's more to this than meets the eye... AVB said "First he was authorised to come back on Friday" - do you know when any of the other Togo players rejoined their teams? It seems their national team have a whole load of issues which it would take a braver person than me to delve into!

It's been a stop-start first half of the season for him for loads of reasons, not all his fault; let's see what happens now before judging him.

What Harry found out from tonights game

He's signed until 2016, I don't think we need to worry about it for a bit.

Been following today's football on the BBC site, they started the day with a poll on who'd be champions/top 4/relegated - we were consistently in the top 4 predictions, but a fair few of them were citing us as second/biggest worry to man u/contenders for next year, and I'm fairly confident most of them weren't spurs fans.

I have my own thoughts on where we could finish, don't want to ut them into words yet in case of jinxing us, but it's nice to see that other teams see us as a threat. If they're even half right I don't see Bale going abroad for a while, the possibilities with us will be too tasty.

    Bale brace - another win

I thought the comment about not giving us any pens was a bit harsh, so I investigated, and it turns out you're bang on right!

http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/en/premier-league/elfmeter-startseite/wettbewerb_GB1.html - this has tables of most penalties given and conceded, as well as converted, by player as well as team, etc etc etc.

In fact, let's turn it into a game: 3 teams haven't conceded a single pen this season, can you guess who? And 3 teams haven't been given a single pen this season, can you guess who? Even seeing the table it took me a while to work out...

To be honest, Dembele seemed a bit foolish playing on as he did (or tried to, before he got hauled off) - there were 10 mins left, we were winning, and he'd quite clearly been hurt, potentially dangerously. That said, 100% respect the way he handled it; totally professional and 'constructive' (i.e. trying to play on and paying absolutely no attention to how the ref dealt with Cabaye, as well as graciously accepting his apology both at the time and as he was taken off) - top pro, top role model, top man; other players (for other teams and one or two of our own) take note!

I think Bale's a great player, but I'm well sick of hearing the praise being laid on him - when he scored the first one the commentators said something about how AVB didn't celebrate much because he must expect him to score! I reckon our strikers would be a whole lot higher up the golden boot table if he didn't play so selfishly. I'm really looking forward to Holtby adjusting to the league and the team more, I think he might impact that dynamic somehow.

Just discovered this old thread - funny how time changes an opinion, eh?

I was nervously interested in what I said then; given we've just sold JJ to QPR it amuses me to see I thought that "'Arry clearly likes him so it's academic"!

    Formation without Defoe?

    by not_blonde_really Feb 3, 2013 14:34
    not_blonde_really not_blonde_really Feb 3, 2013 15:01 Flag

Meant to add, Defoe's not scored in the last 8 games, most of our goals in that time have come from Bale and Dempsey, so personnel isn't necessarily the issue, it's how we maximise the players we can use.

  • not_blonde_really by not_blonde_really Feb 3, 2013 14:34 Flag

Bum bum bum bum bum. Hopefully Defoe's injury won't give him a long layoff, but what formation do we go for without him? In particular for the next few games while we wait for Ade to return.

I'd be inclined to push Dempsey forward but with Holtby or perhaps even Bale close behind (with the other one on the wing) for Newcastle, and for Lyon I reckon I'd give Obika a run.

    Thoughts?

Please don't turn this into another "I know better than Levy & AVB, if they'd got a striker like I told them to we'd be ok" thread, we all know our squad weaknesses and it's typical this happens in the first game after the window closes, but sulking about it isn't going to help.

Interesting... Sunderland used to be known (by me, I'm not pretending it got any further than that) as Northern Spurs due to the number of our old players they had. Do you think this transfer window makes Newcastle the NE Arsenal??

    D-Day - it's arrived!

Alan, normally I find your 'behind the scenes insights' entertaining, but don't you ever put my name in the same sentence as 'gunners shirts' again, you hear me!

SB, Holtby looks like taking a playmaker role, or at least the link-up player - he's described as a midfielder/forward on the reports I've seen, but as I said before I've not seen much of him previously. When he came on at the weekend it seemed to be to allow Bale to move more centrally, perhaps there are thoughts of him filling that spot? Not sure how I feel about that, he likes to be the hero which isn't really doable for a winger so it might be an astute move... or he might need a manager to put him in his place and make him stay there, I can't decide!

John, I imagine that Holtby would generally be taking the place of a striker, either with Defoe or Ade being picked to play ahead of him based on the type of team (Ade for physical, Defoe for speedy).

As I mentioned, I've heard noises about our academy having loads of players ready to blood, maybe now's the time to do that with the likes of Obika/Carroll/Kane (when he's back from loan)?

The thing that most hurts about this anti-climatic day (not even any exciting rumours!) isn't Levy pressing snooze too many times to get up at 2230 and go to work as normal, it's that the person who usurps him with getting the just after 11 signing is none other than Arsene bleeding Wenger! Although they have said it's subject to formal registration being completed, it'd be funny if it didn't happen...

I miss 'Arry. So far this D-Day's been proper dull for Spurs - the most exciting story so far is we've sent Adam Smith on loan to Millwall. Come on football, where are the outrageous rumours which it turns out actually have a tiny slither of truth?? I've come to rely on you...

  • not_blonde_really by not_blonde_really Jan 31, 2013 12:57 Flag

Although I must admit, I'm feeling thoroughly underwhelmed by in. SSN were at our training ground and said something about someone having a medical, but my signal cut out when they said who - I couldn't even say for sure if they were coming in or going out, it might have been Bentley to QPR. They then went on to talk about strikers, so didn't sound like it was one of them coming in.

Anyone heard any juicy rumours? Clearest I've got is...

Ooh, SSN just said Andros Townsend arrived at QPR's medical place to find the deal was off! And him, Bents, & JJ were all maybes earlier but they're all currently off - note the currently. Sounds like there are a few offers in for him, I hope only for loan deals, he was one of our key faces for the future a while back.

Also, our academy's apparently meant to be stuffed full of youngsters ready to start bedding into the first tam, which perhaps explains cutting the older players; imagine being mentored by the likes of Gallas, Bale or Parker!

Sorry for tangent (again), but our team tonight is: Lloris, Walker, Dawson, Vertonghen, Assou-Ekotto, Dembele, Parker, Lennon, Bale, Dempsey & Defoe

Would you say that's our first 11? I think I would. The question mark for me is over that link-up players - I.e. I'd say they're all first choice except maybe Dempsey, which is the sort of position that Holtby's likely to be filling isn't it? Interesting...
