Alexander Volkov: ‘I’ve Been Due a Bellator Title Shot for a While’

Alexander Volkov Blasts Fabricio Werdum (UFC London Results)

Former Bellator heavyweight champion Alexander Volkov (24-4) takes on Tony Johnson (8-2) at Bellator 136 on Friday at the Bren Events Center in Irvine, Calif. He expects an exciting fight.

“Tony Johnson is a good wrestler, so I expect him to try to execute his wrestling skills,” Volkov recently told MMAWeekly.com. “My goal for this fight is to dictate the pace of the fight and dictate where the fight goes and to beat him everywhere.”

Johnson’s wrestling and size are the only things Volkov thinks his opponent has that could give him trouble in the fight.

“He’s a big, powerful wrestler. That’s the only threat that he could possibly have for me in this fight. I’m in great shape. I had a very good training camp,” he said. “It’s going to be a good, exciting fight and I look forward to it.”

The bout with Johnson will be Volkov’s third fight in five months. The 26-year-old likes to stay active.

“I like to fight often. I never back down from an opponent or taking a fight. I like to stay active because it keeps me in shape physically and mentally and gives me a chance to make money,” he said.

When asked whether a win over Johnson will earn him a title shot, Volkov said a title shot is long overdue.

“I think I was supposed to fight for the title six months ago when I won the eight-man tournament. I was supposed to fight for the title quite a while ago. I’ve been due a title shot for a while,” said the Bellator Season 10 Heavyweight Tournament winner.
