The Austrian World Cup downhill champion set a time of one minute, 57.74 seconds, finishing 0.26 seconds ahead of Norway’s Aksel Lund Svindal and 0.28 ahead of Svindal’s compatriot Kjetil Jansrud.

Kroell now has his sights set on becoming the first Austrian winner of the Streif course downhill since Michael Walchhofer in 2006.

"It's about time an Austrian wins it again," Kroell said. "The whole team is confident, me as well.

"I was happy with my run. I had a much better feeling on the snow than yesterday. I still wasn't 100 per cent clean though.

“The course is pretty rough. You have to stay in the middle of your skis and always keep pressure on both of them."

Second-fastest Svindal, current leader of the discipline standings, had run fastest in the previous two training sessions ahead of another Austrian in Hannes Reichelt.

Reichelt was one of several competitors, including Italian Peter Fill and Canada’s Jan Hudec, to skip the final training.

Christof Innerhofer, who won the Lauberhorn downhill in Wengen on Saturday, and Guillermo Fayed both crashed but emerged unharmed.
