Ashlee Evans-Smith Suspended and Fined for UFC 181 Positive Drug Test Result

Ashlee Evans-Smith received her full punishment from the Nevada Athletic Commission on Tuesday for having tested positive for a banned diuretic in her UFC 181 fight-night drug test.

Evans-Smith tested positive for hydrochlorothiazide in drug testing done surrounding her fight with Raquel Pennington at UFC 181 on Dec. 6 in Las Vegas. Pennington won the bout via technical submission with a bulldog choke, so the outcome of the bout was not in question.

Neither Evans-Smith nor any of her representatives were present in person or via phone at Tuesday’s meeting.

After reviewing the facts of the case, which included contradictory information on Evans-Smith’s pre-fight medical questionnaire versus her initial response to the complaint, the commission voted unanimously to implement sanctions.

Evans-Smith had revealed taking no specific supplements on her medical questionnaire, according to the commission, but later admitted to taking supplements that she believed caused the positive drug test result.

The commission issued Evans-Smith a nine-month suspension retroactive to the Dec. 6 date of the fight. She was also fined 30-percent of her $8,000 fight purse, which amounts to $2,400. Evans-Smith must also provide a clean drug test result if she ever applies to fight in Nevada again.
