Baseball-Major League Baseball roundup

May 24 (The Sports Xchange) - The San Francisco Giants obtained third baseman Casey McGehee from the Miami Marlins in December hoping he would be an adequate replacement for Pablo Sandoval, but because of his lack of production the team designated McGehee for assignment Sunday. McGehee, 32, is hitting just .200 with two home runs and nine RBIs in 35 games. He has been benched for a number of games recently. Last season, he hit .287 with four homers and 76 RBIs for the Marlins and was named National League Comeback Player of the Year. - - - The Cleveland Indians activated catcher Yan Gomes from the disabled list and inserted him into the lineup against the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday. He has been on the DL since April 12 with a sprained MCL in his right knee. - - - The Oakland Athletics and the Tampa Bay Rays each had a player leave Sunday's game because of injury. A's starter Sonny Gray left after five innings because of a left ankle contusion, and Rays right fielder Steven Souza departed in the third inning with a sprained left wrist. Gray was injured when he was struck in the leg by a hit by Rays first baseman James Loney in the fourth inning. Souza had to leave after taking one swing in his second at-bat. - - - The Baltimore Orioles sent left-hander T.J. McFarland to Triple-A Norfolk and promoted right-hander Chaz Roe from the same team. Roe, 28, has major-league experience -- 24 relief appearances in the past two years with the Arizona Diamondbacks and New York Yankees. - - - Detroit Tigers left-hander Kyle Lobstein, the losing pitcher in Saturday's game, was placed on the 15-day disabled list with left shoulder soreness. - - - The Boston Red Sox placed right fielder Shane Victorino on the 15-day disabled list with a left calf strain and activated infielder Jeff Bianchi from Triple-A Pawtucket. Victorino, sidelined for the second time this season and 11th time since 2007, left Saturday's game in the third inning after injuring his leg while catching a fly ball. - - - Miami Marlins catcher Jeff Mathis (broken hand) was sent to Triple-A New Orleans for a rehab assignment.
