Cameroon 4-1 Ethiopia LIVE! Ekambi goal - AFCON 2022 result, match stream and latest updates today

Cameroon vs Ethiopia - LIVE!

Vincent Aboubakar and Karl Toko Ekambi scored twice each as hosts Cameroon secured their place in the last 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations with a thumping 4-1 victory over Ethiopia.

It wasn’t the best of starts though for the hosts, as Ethiopia took a surprise early lead through Dawa Hottesa inside four minutes.

But for the second successive match, Cameroon roared back from behind as captain Aboubakar took his tally for the tournament to four goals and Toko-Ekambi also bagged a brace.

Cameroon have a maximum six points from two matches, and have already netted six goals. No other team has yet scored more than once.

The hosts will meet Cape Verde in their final Group A match, and with qualification already secured they have the option of resting key players ahead of the knockout stages should they choose to.

Cameroon 4-1 Ethiopia: Aboubakar brace as hosts secure knockout spot

Elsewhere in Group A...

18:16 , Matt Verri

Burkina Faso face Cape Verde tonight, and they could really do with a win after their opening defeat.

There’s less pressure on Cape Verde though. Their win over Ethiopia in the first round of matches has put them in a great position in terms of qualifying from the group.

A win against Burkina Faso and they’ll be joining Cameroon in the last 16.

18:07 , Matt Verri

So that’s Cameroon through to the knockout stages after a perfect start to the tournament for them.

Final match of Cape Verde may give them the chance to rest some key men.

FULL-TIME

17:51 , Matt Verri

Cameroon 4-1 Ethiopia

Two games, two wins... Cameroon are into the knockout stages already.

Vincent Aboubakar already has four for the tournament, and the hosts look in really good form.

Ethiopia certainly played their part, but they were blown away in the second-half.

17:48 , Matt Verri

90 mins: Three minutes added on.

Fai has been brilliant this afternoon and he nearly gets a goal to cap it off. Shoots from distance, but it bounces back off the post.

17:44 , Matt Verri

87 mins: And now Ethiopia miss an even bigger chance!

Cameroon lose it deep in their own half, it’s played across the box and Melayu is running onto it completely free.

He lifts it over Onana... but over the bar. Had to score from there.

17:42 , Matt Verri

86 mins: Big, big chance.

Corner is headed back at the far post, drops invitingly for Hongla who is standing on the penalty spot. Snatches at it though and he skies it over the bar.

17:41 , Matt Verri

85 mins: Cameroon want more!

Anguissa with the driving run into the box, works it back onto his right foot and gets the shot away. Deflected behind for a corner.

17:40 , Matt Verri

83 mins: Kebede is on for Ethiopa, their all-time leading goalscorer.

He’s got seven minute plus stoppage time to find at least three goals for his side. No pressure...

17:35 , Matt Verri

79 mins: Aboubakar rested for another day, he’ll have the last 11 minutes off as Cameroon continue to make changes.

Hosts are well on course to reach the knockout stages, and in comprehensive fashion.

17:34 , Matt Verri

77 mins: Match has slowed right down after that burst from Cameroon at the start of the half.

Both sides would be content for this to finish as it is, you’d imagine.

17:32 , Matt Verri

75 mins: Solomon plays it wide, Ethiopia still trying to offer something in attack. Cross is a poor one though.

Siliki is down for Cameroon, not a great challenge and he’s feeling the effects of it.

17:28 , Matt Verri

71 mins: Ethiopia could do with the final-whistle now, but there’s still 20 minutes left.

Aboubakar plays Anguissa in and he hammers a shot against the post. Wouldn’t have counted, offside flag is up.

17:27 , Matt Verri

70 mins: There’s not going to be a hat-trick for Ekambi, that was his final touch of the match.

A couple of changes for Cameroon, with this match wrapped up. Njie on for his second cameo of the tournament.

GOAL! Cameroon 4-1 Ethiopia | Karl Toko Ekambi 68'

17:24 , Matt Verri

RUTHLESS FROM CAMEROON!

Ekambi has his second of the match and it’s a wonderful finish.

He’s played in down the left wing, cuts inside into the box and takes his time before firing it in at the near post.

17:22 , Matt Verri

65 mins: Yusef whips a ball into the box for Ethiopia, but it’s straight at Onana.

They’re starting to look tired, having played so well in the first-half.

17:19 , Matt Verri

62 mins: Ekambi should really have made it 4-1!

Aboubakar slides a lovely pass through the defence, Ekambi is just about onside and he curls an effort that takes a slight deflection before bouncing off the goalkeeper’s knee and behind for a corner.

17:17 , Matt Verri

60 mins: Aboubakar was a tight offside call away from scoring a hat-trick against Burkina Faso.

He has half an hour to get himself the match ball tonight. You wouldn’t back against it, with how Cameroon have started this half.

17:15 , Matt Verri

58 mins: Ethiopia look ragged now, Cameroon are tearing them apart.

Siliki looks to be free to make it 4-1, but it’s blocked behind for a corner. Relentless stuff from the hosts.

Keeper just about punches it away, and he wins the free-kick anyway.

GOAL! Cameroon 3-1 Ethiopia | Vincent Aboubakar 55'

17:12 , Matt Verri

ABOUBAKAR AGAIN!

Ruthless from Cameroon and they’ve blown Ethiopia away in a couple of minutes.

Ngamaleu into the box, plays it across the face of goal and Aboubakar slides in to turn it home from just a couple of yards out.

GOAL! Cameroon 2-1 Ethiopia | Vincent Aboubakar 53'

17:10 , Matt Verri

AND CAMEROON GO AND TAKE THE LEAD!

Ethiopia really wish they’d made more of that opening now.

It’s Fai again who finds himself in space on the right and looks up to plays a perfect cross into the box. Aboubakar just has to wait for the ball to land on his head and he powers it into the net for his third of the tournament.

17:08 , Matt Verri

52 mins: Ethiopia comfortable on the ball at the back, happy to just be patient and keep knocking it around.

They work it all the way up to the pitch, Nasir’s lovely dummy allows it to run through to Hotessa. He has a lot of time, but decides to shoot first time and it’s miles over. That was a very presentable chance.

17:05 , Matt Verri

49 mins: Brilliant goalkeeping from Shanko!

Aboubakar thought he was going to have a tap-in six yards out. Ball played across, the striker is completely free, but Shanko comes flying out and slides in to win the ball.

VAR checking it though... all good. Ethiopia survive.

17:03 , Matt Verri

47 mins: Wow. Solomon, who has just been brought on for Ethiopia, is clearly in confident mood.

Picks it up about 35 yards out and decides to have an effort at goal. Hardly any pace on it by the time it gets to Onana.

17:02 , Matt Verri

Back underway!

Dagnachew off at the break. Ethiopia don’t want to risk a red card in the second-half.

17:00 , Matt Verri

Ethiopia certainly still in with a chance of reaching the knockout stages if they keep this level of performance up.

Top two from each group as well as the four best third-placed teams, so good chance to go through even with a few points.

Teams back out onto the pitch.

Lead didn’t last long though...

16:57 , Matt Verri

Ethiopia’s opening goal...

16:53 , Matt Verri

16:51 , Matt Verri

15 shots in the first-half... 8 for Cameroon, 7 for Ethiopia.

The hosts have had 58% of possession, but that won’t bother Ethiopia at all. They’ve been far more threatening when winning the ball back and breaking up the pitch.

HALF-TIME

16:47 , Matt Verri

Cameroon 1-1 Ethiopia

And that’s half time. It’s been a brilliant 45 minutes, both sides showing plenty in attack in what has been a really open match.

More of the same after the break would be perfect!

16:46 , Matt Verri

45 mins: Free-kick for Ethiopia as Hongla tries to hold the ball up. He has no idea what that’s been given for. One minute to be added on.

Nasir looks really bright for Ethiopia, he holds onto the ball well. Comes to Dagnachew 20 yards out, catches it well and Onana beats it away.

16:44 , Matt Verri

43 mins: Ethiopia enjoying their best spell of sustained possession.

It’s not where they’ve looked most dangerous though... on the counter breaking with pace has been where they’ve caused Cameroon real problems.

16:40 , Matt Verri

40 mins: It’s all happening now!

Corner for Cameroon, Ekambi wins the header but sees it thud back off the post.

Ethiopia go straight on the attack though and they have a 3-on-1. Don’t use the space though and when the ball eventually is played, Cameroon have enough defenders back.

16:39 , Matt Verri

39 mins: Brilliant defending from Tamene! Ethiopia hanging on all of a sudden.

Clipped through to Aboubakar, he chests it down and is about to volley it into the net.... but Tamene’s leg just about stretches enough to clear it behind for a corner.

16:38 , Matt Verri

38 mins: Ethiopia just slowing things down a bit as they win a couple of throw-ins.

They’d be very happy to go into the break level, and with a performance that will really encourage them.

Cameroon nearly ruin those plans though. Fai chops inside onto his left foot, whips a nice ball into the box but it’s headed away as Aboubakar lurks behind.

16:35 , Matt Verri

35 mins: First corner of the match and it’s for Cameroon.

They look dangerous from it too as Shanko comes to claim but gets nowhere near. He’s fortunate to see the header loop back into his arms.

GOOOO.... OFFSIDE!

16:33 , Matt Verri

33 mins: It’s another really nice move from Cameroon.

Worked out to the left and played back across the face of goal for Ngamaleu to have a tap in from a couple of yards into the empty net.

But he’s well offside, and the flag goes straight up. Don’t need VAR for that one.

16:31 , Matt Verri

31 mins: Good run from Aboubakar in behind, can’t quite catch up with the long ball though and it runs through to Shanko.

Anguissa down and looks in a bit of pain... he turned awkwardly and could have jarred his knee. He’s going to be ok to continue.

16:28 , Matt Verri

28 mins: Aboubakar moves his teammates away and lines this one up himself.

Straight into the wall. Worked back forward and it drops for Choupo-Moting in the box, but he pulls the shot well wide.

16:27 , Matt Verri

27 mins: Ekambi tries to scoop a pass through to Choupo-Moting. Doesn’t come off, but the goalscorer wins a free-kick as he was tripped after playing the pass.

Dagnachew the offender. He’s already on a yellow card... referee gives him a final warning. Ethiopia can’t go down to ten men again.

16:25 , Matt Verri

25 mins: HUGE CHANCE!

Ethiopia should be back in front! Lovely ball as Gebremichael is too quick for Tolo. Digs out a shot which Onana saves with his feet but it’s straight back out and the rebound falls to Hotessa.

He can’t quite sort his feet out quick enough and rather than tapping in from a few yards, he scuffs a poor effort towards goal and it’s cleared.

16:22 , Matt Verri

22 mins: Nasir plays it out wide and it’s then passed back to Ethiopia’s number 10.

He whips a first-time effort at goal, wide of the far post. Onana was very confident, but it didn’t look like it was too far away from sneaking in the corner.

16:21 , Matt Verri

21 mins: Anguissa standing over it. Looks like he’s lining up for a shot actually, from a tight angle.

He is... he shouldn’t have. Blazes it over the bar. Not sure his teammates in the box will be thrilled with that decision.

16:19 , Matt Verri

19 mins: Ethiopia threaten there as Gebremichael finds himself in so much space in the box, but his effort is blocked. That was a really decent chance.

Fai then wins a free-kick for Cameroon, in a dangerous position on the left wing. Just outside the box.

16:17 , Matt Verri

17 mins: Fai stands another ball up to the back post. Just too much height on it this time though and Choupo-Moting can’t get on the end of it.

Hongla then shoots from range under pressure and it’s well over the bar. All Cameroon at the moment.

16:15 , Matt Verri

15 mins: This referee is not in a generous mood this afternoon.

Dagnachew with a slightly late challenge, and the yellow card comes straight out. He joins Hongla and Choupo-Moting in the book after just 15 minutes.

16:13 , Matt Verri

12 mins: Nice run from Tolo on the left wing, but the ball has just a bit too much pace on it and it rolls out for a goal-kick.

A chance for a few seconds of calm after a breathless start to the match.

16:11 , Matt Verri

10 mins: Hope this is a sign of things to come in the next round of group games!

Cameroon coming forward again, much more confident after that quick equaliser. Ethiopia still looking to push up though.

GOAL! Cameroon 1-1 Ethiopia | Karl Toko Ekambi 9'

16:08 , Matt Verri

CAMEROON LEVEL ALREADY!

What a start to this match. Aboubakar lets fly from range and it’s well saved by Shanko.

Fai has it on the right though and clips a lovely ball back into the box, and Ekambi can head his side level. Great ball in from Fai.

16:07 , Matt Verri

7 mins: This has been a really impressive start from Ethiopia. They’re pressing high up the pitch, and Onana is nearly caught out as he tries to play it short.

Choupo-Moting now into the book for a late challenge. This is not what Cameroon had planned for the first seven minutes.

GOAL! Cameroon 0-1 Ethiopia | Dawa Hotessa 4'

16:05 , Matt Verri

WOW! Ethiopia have the lead!

Brilliant ball out to the right where Nasir has plenty of time and space. He looks up, puts a low cross into the box and Hotessa is free to slot past Onana and score a shock opening goal!

Who saw that coming?!

16:02 , Matt Verri

2 mins: Loose pass in midfield allows Ethiopia to break as Nasir brings it forward for his side. They then win a free-kick, chance to put the ball into the Cameroon box early on.

They have other ideas though - taken short and eventually they lose it after Mohammed’s poor pass.

KICK-OFF!

16:00 , Matt Verri

Ethiopia kick us off and we are underway for the second round of AFCON group matches!

15:59 , Matt Verri

Players are out on the pitch, kick-off just a couple of minutes away now.

Ethiopia captain waiting for the coin toss... Cameroon team have about 50 photographers taking the team picture.

15:56 , Matt Verri

Plenty of attacking talent on the pitch for Cameroon this afternoon.

New round of AFCON fixtures... hopefully this one has more goals in store!

Nearly time...

15:50 , Matt Verri

Just over ten minutes until kick-off. Cameroon looking effectively guarantee their places in the knockout stages, Ethiopia hoping for a huge upset to keep their hopes alive.

15:42 , Matt Verri

Vincent Aboubakar leads the tournament goalscoring charts after his brace again Burkina Faso.

That’s hardly surprising - Cameroon were the only team to score more than once in the opening round of fixtures.

Cameroon boss Antonio Conceicao gives his thoughts

15:20 , Matt Verri

Not an easy job for Antonio Conceicao, leading Cameroon at a home AFCON, but he is confident his team are in a good place as they look to make it two wins out of two.

“We prepared our match against Ethiopia with the same confidence as in the first match,” Conceicao said.

“We will apply our strategy to win, work to win, work for recovery. All players are ready for this meeting.”

15:13 , Matt Verri

So Eric Choupo-Moting starts for Cameroon - he played 20 minutes off the bench in the tournament opener against Burkina Faso. Vincent Aboubakar will be looking to add to his tally, after scoring two penalties in that match.

This is Ethiopia’s toughest match of the group on paper, but after a defeat to Cape Verde they need to start picking up points. Big ask though this afternoon.

Tunisia complain to CAF over Mali farce

14:54 , George Flood

Yesterday’s Group F tie between Tunisia and Mali in Limbe descended into farce after referee Janny Sikazwe ended the game 13 seconds early, having previously tried to blow the full-time whistle on 85 minutes.

The two teams were ordered to play out the remainder of the contest around 20 minutes later, only for Tunisia to refuse as their 1-0 defeat was confirmed.

It has since been said that Sikazwe was suffering from sunstroke and later needed to go to hospital, while the BBC have now confirmed that Tunisia’s football federation (FTF) have written to the Confederation of African Football (Caf) to complain.

On Thursday, CAF said they were awaiting further reports from match officials before commenting further.

“Caf is forwarding these documents to the competent bodies of Caf,” a statement read. “At this stage, Caf is not in a position to make further comment until the responsible bodies indicate the way forward.”

Head to head record

14:22 , George Flood

These two nations have only met twice before in competitive action.

The first was at the 1970 Africa Cup of Nations in Sudan, where Cameroon won 3-2.

They also faced off in the African Nations Championship in 2016, playing out a goalless draw in Rwanda.

Cameroon vs Ethiopia prediction

14:13 , George Flood

Given how hyped Cameroon have been for a tournament on home soil, there’s always a danger of the pressure becoming too much.

Still, while they weren’t overly convincing against Burkina Faso, it would be foolish to write them off.

Cameroon to win 2-1.
