Cathal Pendred Latest in a Flurry of Irish Fighters Taking Over UFC Boston
The UFC Fight Night 59: McGregor vs. Siver fight card is quickly being overrun by the fighting Irish.
UFC officials on Thursday announced that Irishman Cathal Pendred as joined the Jan. 18 line-up in Boston, where he will face American fighter Sean Spencer in a welterweight bout.
Pendred joins Irish teammates Conor McGregor and Patrick Holohan on the card, which also includes Northern Ireland’s Norman Parke.

“This will be like UFC Dublin part two,” said Pendred. “I can see 3,000 or 4,000 people flying over from Dublin to this event. The rest will be made up mainly of people from Boston who are Irish-Americans.”
It’s actually a homecoming of sorts for Pendred, who was born in Boston, but resides in Dublin.
“Boston is my birth place; my parents were working in Boston when I was born in '87 and I lived there until I was four,” he said. “This is a dream come true. I haven't been back since I left and to be making my return there to fight in the UFC, it's like something out of a movie.”
Pendred (15-2-1) hasn’t lost in four years. He enters the fight with Spencer on a five-fight winning streak, including victories over Mike King and Gasan Umalatov in his first two fights in the Octagon.
Spencer (12-3) has a much lengthier tenure in the UFC, having fought his last five bouts in the Octagon, where his record stands at 3-2. He comes into the fight in Boston having won an impressive three-round unanimous decision over former welterweight contender Paulo Thiago.
McGregor headlines the Boston event, facing Dennis Siver in a five-round featherweight non-title fight. Should he win, he is likely to get a shot at current 145-pound champion Jose Aldo.
