Steve Coppell has revealed he approached Crawley to offer his services to the npower League Two promotion contenders.

Former Crystal Palace and Manchester City manager Coppell was appointed director of football at Broadfield Stadium on Tuesday to help caretaker boss Craig Brewster after Steve Evans left to take charge of Rotherham.

Coppell told Sky Sports News: "Crawley are a club I've known for many years. I used to make regular visits and know people behind the scenes.

"I had been away in Norway and when I got back somebody told me Steve Evans had left.

"The thought went through my mind that maybe I could help and offer my experience and expertise for the final five games, so I made a phone call and they wanted to see what I could do.

"It's just a case of trying to prepare as best as possible.

"I don't have the specific knowledge required yet (of League Two), I'm just trying to help Craig and the players for the games to come."
