Dana White Says Jon Jones vs. Anthony Johnson in the Works for May

The UFC is targeting Jon Jones’ title defense against Anthony “Rumble” Johnson for May.

UFC president Dana White dropped the news on Wednesday’s edition of The Jim Rome Show, saying, “We're looking to do that fight in May. I don't have the exact date yet, but May.”

The UFC had initially been targeting featherweight champion Jose Aldo’s defense against Conor McGregor for a May pay-per-view, which would be UFC 187 on May 23 in Las Vegas, but McGregor’s coach recently indicated that the fight was probably going to be pushed back to a summer date. So it’s likely that Jones vs. Johnson would headline UFC 187 if they get the fight inked for May.

Johnson earned his shot at Jones by derailing Alexander Gustafsson at UFC on FOX 14 this past weekend. The lanky Swede had been working towards a rematch with Jones for more than a year, but timing being what it is, Johnson came storming back into the Octagon during that time and has run roughshod over everyone he has fought.

There has been no word from either camp yet about the proposed May date.
