Dana White Still Confident Georges St-Pierre Will Return to the UFC

Georges St-Pierre has Returned to the Gym, but He's Heavier than Ever

When former UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre officially announced that he was vacating the 170-pound title and taking time off from fighting in December 2013, the biggest question was, why? Speculation spread, but as we approach the anniversary of his announcement, the lingering question is, will he return?

In March, St-Pierre tore his left ACL and was recently cleared by doctors to return to training. His longtime trainer Firas Zahabi tweeted a photo of the Canadian back in the Tristar Gym days after he received medical clearance. The development added fuel to the already flaming speculation.

Last week, UFC president Dana White and UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta flew to Canada to have lunch with the former titleholder, but they didn’t discuss a potential comeback.

“We literally sat down with GSP and just had lunch with him,” White said during the UFC 179 Post Show. “We sat down and talked and he just got cleared last Friday or the Friday before. He’s ready to start training 100-percent. He’s going to take some time before he comes back.”

Although St-Pierre hasn’t given any public indication that he plans to fight again, White is confident that we’ll see the two-time champion back in the octagon at some point.

“I think he’ll come back, but he’s taking his time. We haven’t talked about a fight. We have nothing even planned, or not even thinking about a fight with Georges St-Pierre, but just waiting for him to get back into shape.”
