Dexter: New Blood - Will there be a season 2?
Dexter: New Blood spoilers ahead.
You know the old saying, when one door closes, another opens? Well, Dexter: New Blood seems to have taken that pretty literally with its conclusion to season one.
The serial killer with a conscience returned to our screens after 10 years of believing he had got away with murder. But even living life in the picturesque town of Iron Lake wasn't enough to quell the call of the Dark Passenger in his head.
Throw in the return of your long-lost child and it was only a matter of time before things started going wrong tremendously quickly.
While it seems the future of the show is pretty wrapped up, Dexter has beaten the odds on more than one occasion, and may now continue on in a new form.
Even the bosses aren't convinced we've seen the last of this story.

Dexter: New Blood season 2 – Will there be one?
You would think the answer to this would be "no" if you watched the season finale. After his past was unearthed, Dexter – who had rebranded himself to become local shop worker Jim Lindsay – finally met a grisly end.
Yup, the character famously played by Michael C Hall has shuffled off this mortal coil, following a showdown with his troubled and distant teenage son, Harrison (Jack Alcott).
But that doesn't mean it's all over just yet.
In the finale, it seemed the pair were finally bonding after being reunited, with them both sharing their dark sides and urge to kill. They were both "born in blood" as Dexter himself would say, thanks to historical childhood trauma where both, tragically, were left in tears covered in their parents' blood after their murders.
But in a bid to escape Iron Lake as Dexter's past misdeeds started catching up with him, Harrison ended up turning a gun on his dad after he failed to abide by his own rules over who should and shouldn't live.
The number one rule: Only murder those who deserve to die. By killing off a police officer who was holding him in custody, Dexter broke it.
Meanwhile, Miami Metro's Angel had finally discovered his old blood-spatter analyst pal was actually alive and well, and most likely the mysterious Bay Harbour Butcher. As a result, the net was closing in around Dexter anyway.
Alcott spoke of what it was like to play the character responsible for axing a truly memorable anti-hero.
"I was worried about it after we shot it, because I was like, 'Oh my God, I killed Dexter. I'm going to be the most hated man in America for at least a week'," the young actor said (via Esquire).
"Because even though it is the right ending, the ending the show deserves, the ending the character deserves, the ending the character wants, there's definitely some guilt that comes with killing off one of the coolest TV characters of all time."
Alcott admitted to feeling the pressure when it came to the actual shooting in the climactic death scene.
"It was the most stressful thing I think I experienced in the entire shoot," he explained.
"I thought, 'How am I going to deliver a performance worthy of all this build up? I'm missing all this context'."
However, the guidance of Hall and the executive producers helped ease his nerves.
"The gun came up way earlier in the original version of the scene, so that the entire scene was at gunpoint," Alcott recalls.
"In playing with it, we discovered that it comes up later, it makes a lot more room for a nuanced scene. It's less of just an angry son shooting his dad and more of a mutual discovery that this is how it's supposed to end and it won't work any other way."
"It's a divisive ending," Alcott went on to add.
"But I also feel incredibly blessed to be part of a story that's going to affect a lot of people. Whether it makes them angry, happy or sad, whether it makes them hate me, whatever, it's cool to tell stories that affect people—regardless of what that effect is."
Despite the main character dying, show bosses have already confirmed plans for season two.
Speaking to TVLine, showrunner Clyde Phillips said: “It’s all in Showtime’s hands. If they were to call me and say, ‘We want to do Harrison. We want you to figure it out,’ I’m pretty busy, but I would drop everything I’m doing and jump right into it. I would love to do it, but it’s really up to Showtime.”
In August 2022, TV executive David Nevins continued to stoke the flames of a possible return during his chat with The Hollywood Reporter about future plans for Paramount Global:
"There are a lot of things. What is the future [of] the Dexter franchise? I am actively working on that."
However, Showtime Networks president Gary Levine put a slight downer on all this just one month later in September 2022 when he said "It's too soon to say," if New Blood will return. "We're still basking in the glow of the limited series, which was everything we hoped for."
Now, that's not an outright no, even if it isn't the promising renewal announcement we were hoping for...
TV Line reported that the show was the most watched series in Showtime history averaging 8 million weekly viewers across all platforms. 3 million viewers tuned in for the finale on the premiere night alone making it the most-watched Showtime finale in eight years, falling just short of the Dexter finale which attracted a whopping 3.3 million viewers in 2013.
As of November 2022, there has still been no official announcement about Dexter's return for a potential second season of New Blood. But give it time... surely it's a matter of 'when' and not 'if'.
Dexter: New Blood season 2 cast – Who will be in it?
If season two is to go ahead (though, as we've already said, there have been no official announcements) New Blood will shift focus from Dexter over to his son Harrison, played by Jack Alcott.
Last we saw of the teenage son of a serial killer, he was on the run after shooting his dad dead. Police chief Angela Bishop (Julia Jones) took the blame for Dexter's death after finding Harrison with the body, allowing him to start life anew without the burden of his dad's murder to deal with.
We can't say that was the greatest decision on her part considering viewers already know he's got a bit of a dangerous killer streak himself, but there you go.
With the chance of a fresh start in front of him, there's no telling where Harrison will go, or what he will do with what he's learned from his father's moral killer code.
As a result, who will be joining the cast list is up for debate. He has no ties to any living relatives that we know of. He could literally go anywhere.
His actual mother died in season four of the original Dexter. We also learned that Hannah, Dexter's girlfriend who left with Harrison for a better life in the season 8 finale, died off-screen of cancer between the original series and New Blood. It's the only reason Harrison even bothered to track Dexter down.
Now his dad's dead too? The sky is literally the limit for this immensely troubled kid.
What will the plot of Dexter: New Blood season 2 be?
Showrunner Clyde Phillips has gone on record to state that he would be up for a season two, it would just be a case of US network Showtime giving them the go-ahead.
In a chat with Deadline, he confirmed that this would mean moving forward with Harrison in the central role.
"Harrison is such a complicated character and he has within him the seeds of the dark passenger," he told them. "He's capable. Look at that takedown of Dexter in the end, what's in Harrison is that he has to kill this man."
"Also, Harrison brings a different perspective to the vigilantism of it all than Dexter did, which was kind of surprising to Dexter," Phillips adds. "He brings this youthful, optimistic innocence, that he and his dad are basically Batman and Robin – 'Think of every time we take out one of these bad guys how many lives we're saving, that this bad person is not going to kill.'
"Dexter never thought of that. Dexter was only taking out bad guys because that was his code."
