Doherty backs Oz to reclaim No.1 ODI spot by trouncing India 5-2

Sydney, Oct 13 (ANI): Australian spinner Xavier Doherty has said that Australia is on the 'cusp' of regaining their world number one spot even though he admitted that they have not performed well as they would have liked over the past 18 months. Australia has set itself the lofty target of beating current World Cup champions and world No. 1 one-day team India 5-2 in their ODI series, which starts on Sunday in Pune, so that they are reinstated as the top-ranked ODI side. According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Doherty said that it is not far-fetched to think of regaining the top ODI spot in the world despite their current poor form as Australia is still ranked second and is in a 'pretty good position' ahead of the 2015 World Cup. Even though the report said that the task seems rocky given India's star-studded line-up including captain MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh and Australia missing regular captain Michael Clarke, however, Doherty said that reclaiming the top position is possible following Australia's one-day success in England after the summer Ashes. According to Doherty, if they play to their ability in India like they did in England, there is no doubt that they can come away with a series win. (ANI)
