Dortmund talk up Hummels

Borussia Dortmund have called Mats Hummels "Germany’s best centre-back" after he signed a new deal with the Bundesliga champions.

Hummels, 23, signed a five-year extension to his contract on Sunday, tying him to Dortmund until 2017.

The former Bayern Munich trainee joined Dortmund in 2009 after a successful loan spell and he has gone on to be a first-choice defensive partner to Neven Subotic, earning international honours in the process.

He is currently preparing for the European Championships in Poland and Ukraine, with Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc insisting he should be one of the first names on the Germany team-sheet.

"If there's one thing that the Dortmund players are perhaps missing, it could be their lack of international experience," Zorc told Kicker magazine.

"The national team coach should know that he can rely on our players, though.

"And on Mats Hummels in particular, he's Germany's best centre-back."

Hummels has 14 caps for Germany, although he faces a battle with Holger Badstuber and Benedikt Hoewedes to partner Per Mertesacker in the heart of Joachim Loew’s defence.
