James Tredwell has been called up to England's Test squad

James Tredwell is to join England's Test squad as they prepare to face India at Eden Gardens next week.

The Kent off-spinner was named in both England's Twenty20 and one-day international squads, also against India next month and in January.

But it has emerged too that England intend to call him up as an understudy to Graeme Swann and Monty Panesar in the middle of a four-match series currently standing at 1-1 following their famous victory in Mumbai.

England seem sure to play two spinners in the final two Tests, after Panesar and Swann combined to take 19 wickets at the Wankhede Stadium - and Tredwell, recently named his county's new captain, is therefore set to fly to India early.

"Tredwell has performed really well for us," said England coach Andy Flower.

"He can make a real impact as a spin bowler.

"He is arriving in Kolkata on December 1 as cover.

"We have some spinners with the Performance Programme. But Tredwell is a senior spinner and will stay with us for the Tests."

The 30-year-old has played just one Test to date, against Bangladesh in Dhaka where he took six wickets.
