Euro Club Index: Juventus on the rise

Euro Club Index

Eurosport

HOW IT WORKS

This season we will use the Hypercube Infostrada Euro Club Index, which scientifically analyses hundreds of thousands of matches from the top divisions in all European nations as well as Europa League and Champions League games.

The Index takes into account all matches played over an eight-year period but with recent results carrying more weight than older ones. The most recent result has 20 times more impact than a result of three years ago.

The performance of a league's teams in the Champions League and Europa League reflects the rise or fall of the sporting level in that league. So, for example, if English teams perform well in Europe, all Premier League teams receive a small bonus in their ECI score. The ranking and its predictive power are thus made even more accurate.

Ahead of the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final clash with Benfica, Chelsea has once again moved up in the Euro Club Index.

Having moved up three places last week, their win at Aston Villa combined with Arsenal's defeat at Queens Park Rangers sees the Blues rise one spot to seventh, switching places with the Gunners.

Benfica also move up one spot to 10th following their win over surprise Portuguese title contenders Braga. The Lisbon club swap places with Valencia, who were held to a 1-1 draw at home to neighbours Levante.

Atletico Madrid are the big movers this week in the top 20, gaining three places to go 17th, moving above French champions Lille and Dutch duo PSV and Ajax in the process.

Juventus move back into the top 20 at the expense of Lyon, while fellow Italian giants AC Milan hold firm in ninth place ahead of their second-leg European clash with top-ranked side Barcelona.
