Giroud was dismissed in the 90th minute at Craven Cottage after he went in over the top of the ball and caught Fulham defender Stanislav Manolev on the leg.

Replays suggested that Giroud slipped while making an attempt to control the ball and Arsene Wenger said he would need to study the incident further before deciding on whether to appeal on the basis of wrongful dismissal.

With Giroud set to miss games against Manchester United, Wigan and QPR at a crucial juncture of the Premier League season, and given Arsenal's lack of options in attack, the club have now put forward an appeal.

A club statement read: "Arsenal Football Club have lodged an appeal to the Football Association for the wrongful dismissal of Olivier Giroud during the Premier League match against Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday.

"An FA regulatory commission will hear the claim and make a verdict on Tuesday afternoon."
