Football - Bentley proud of Shrimps

Jim Bentley was extremely proud of his Morecambe team after they more than held their own in a 2-0 Capital One Cup defeat to Premier League Newcastle.

PA Sport Report

The Magpies had to wait until the 84th minute for substitute Shola Ameobi to fire them in front at League Two Morecambe, and the second-round tie was only finally settled in injury time when younger brother Sammy claimed a second.

Bentley said: "At the end of the day, we have given a great account of ourselves.

"I think we were the better side in the first half, we just needed to score when we were on top.

"It could have been a whole different ball game. Their crowd might have got on top of them a little bit, it would have given us that little bit more confidence.

"But we gave a good account of ourselves, we had a right good go and I am proud of all the players for their efforts."
