Football - Bentley's boys caught unawares

Morecambe boss Jim Bentley admitted his side could not get to grips with Wycombe's pitch or style of play after their 1-0 defeat at Adams Park.

Wycombe's new-signing Paris Cowan-Hall, who joined in the close season after leaving Plymouth on a free transfer, struck the only goal of the game seven minutes into his debut at Adams Park.

Dean Morgan, who crossed for Cowan-Hall's goal, could have scored twice himself, while Jack Sampson was equally as wasteful in front of goal for Morecambe after the break.

"We knew what to expect, but sometimes you are not going to have it all your own way in football," Bentley said.

"The pitch is very long so we couldn't zip it around.

"They played with an unbelievable high tempo; they chased everything going and stopped us from playing. It was evident in the chances we conceded.

"We got caught in possession and they broke with pace. In the second half we had a go. It was a little bit too end-to-end for my liking and their keeper made a couple of good saves.

"It could have been 4-4, it could have been 6-4, it was a bit of a mad game like that, but overall we didn't really deserve anything out of it.

"We put one past the post and they hit the crossbar from a setplay, but the way we went about our business in the first 20 minutes wasn't good enough."
