Football - Brown hails his `playmaker' Corr

Southend manager Phil Brown heaped praise on Barry Corr after the striker struck the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win against Plymouth.

Corr came close to joining Burton during the summer before signing a new deal with Southend and Brown was pleased to see the Irishman prove his importance to the team at Roots Hall.

"It was a big plus when Barry agreed to stay after we thought he was leaving and he popped up with the winner again," said Brown.

"People look at him, see he's 6ft 3in tall and presume he's in the team for us to just launch long balls for him, but he isn't that type of player at all.

"He has number 10 on his back and for me he's that type of player.

"He has a good touch and I think we're starting to play to his strengths.

"His fitness is also improving and scoring the winner will also do him the world of good.

"We probably should have scored more, but I'm pleased with the performance and think the 1-0 scoreline maybe flattered Plymouth a little bit."

Corr fired home from close range after Plymouth goalkeeper Luke McCormick had done well to keep out a low effort from Marc Laird.

McCormick then also did well to tip Freddy Eastwood's free-kick wide of the post before blocking a low shot from Laird with his legs.

Anthony Straker fired a 12-yard shot wide of the post, but the missed opportunities did not come back to haunt the Shrimpers.

Plymouth rarely threatened, with Rueben Reid firing their only real chance of the game straight at Daniel Bentley from close range.
