"I'm very disappointed with the performance, I felt we got what we deserved," admitted Burnett
"It was very frustrating, we looked as though we were a different team than in recent weeks.
"We didn't get going, didn't look threatening at times and weren't good enough.
"They (Hartlepool) defended well, they were organised and the first goal was always going to change the game. They got it and we didn't."
And to add insult to injury Middlesborough loanee Williams pounced with 21 minutes remaining to put United on course for a battling win.
"I didn't think it was a foul, but the referee's not given it (the goal) so you can't comment on that," added Burnett. "He's not going to change his mind so there's nothing you can do about it.
"I'm disappointed because we've played very well at times over the last two or three weeks, but we just didn't seem to get going. There was no tempo, no intensity or no spark.
"We didn't have that urgency, but these players have been fantastic and I can't fault them because they continue to be fantastic. I can't knock them for that.
"But we have to be better at times. If you don't play well and don't take your chances, well then you don't deserve anything."
