Nicky Clark joined Rangers from Queen of the South in the summer

The Gers striker was part of the Queens side that defeated the Light Blues on penalties in the same competition last season at Ibrox.

He has since joined Ally McCoist's ranks but has kept in touch with most of his former team-mates and knows they will be optimistic about coming out on top again.

Clark said: "They will be confident. I'm still close with a lot of the boys and I still speak to them most days so they have been having a bit of banter.

"They went to Ibrox last year and did really well and got a result. It's down at Palmerston this time so I think they will fancy their chances.

"It will be a really hard game. Queens have a good squad and it will be a tough game for us.

"I don't think they have changed much to be honest.

"They have only lost one or two and they have brought in a couple of good players."

Queen of the South went on to win the trophy with the help of Clark's goals and he is now desperate to win more silverware with his new club.

He said: "It's important for us to do well in this competition and hopefully win it.

"You come to a club like this to win trophies.

"The league is first and foremost but cup competitions are a bonus and hopefully we can win a few of them as well."

A transfer embargo meant Clark was initially restricted in terms of appearances for Rangers before the ban was lifted at the end of August.

And he is now relishing the opportunity to cement his place in the manager's plans.

He said: "It was a long month for myself and the rest of the new boys.

"The time is here now that we can all play and hopefully when you get in the team, you can stay there."
