The Millers, currently in the League One play-offs, face a testing festive period, coming up against Bristol City, Wolves, Bradford, Port Vale and Coventry over the next few weeks.

If Evans' men continue their level of performance in that spell they could be firmly in the promotion picture and the former Crawley manager is looking for a big points haul.

"This is a real key period for us," he said. "We have an opportunity to keep ourselves in the pack going into the new year.

"If you look at the quality of the opposition, we have got Bristol City, followed by Wolverhampton Wanderers, followed by Bradford City, Port Vale and then Coventry.

"It doesn't get any better when you're in League One and to get better than that you have to be in the Championship.

"We have to look after ourselves over the next couple of weeks and make sure we get enough points on the board. We have to keep ourselves in contention because this is our toughest run of fixtures of the season.

"If you are going to lose five or six in a row it is going to be difficult in January to pick ourselves up, so we have to make sure we accrue enough points but that is going to be tough."
