Daniel Nardiello bagged his second goal in stoppage time to edge out the Latics in a thrilling League One encounter.
"I've told the players we cannot keep giving ourselves mountains to climb," Evans said. "But if it had been a boxing match the towel would have come in at 80 minutes because we pulverised them and if a football team and a group of lads deserved a last-minute goal then my players deserved it today."
Evans was full of praise for Nardiello, who made his first start this season, adding: "I had a little word with him after 10 minutes and told him to get working harder, but when he works as hard as he does, he will always get chances and always get goals.
"Arguably, he missed his best chance to put us two up and if he had done that it would have been a comfortable day for us.
"He has not played a lot of games because of injury and it was a temptation to bring him off, but I decided to leave him on because if a chance falls to him he will win the game for us."
Man of the match Nardiello broke the deadlock with a goal from the penalty spot after 21 minutes and things looked bleak for the visitors when David Mellor received a straight red card for a kick at Lee Frecklington five minutes before the break.
But two minutes later the visitors equalised following a great solo run by Cristian Montano and they took the lead after 52 minutes with a Matteo Lanzoni tap in.
However, Frecklington's glancing header from Ben Pringle's corner after 62 minutes levelled things up and Nardiello sealed it with a late winner after Mark Oxley saved Alex Revell's first shot but only palmed the ball straight to the Rotherham marksman.
