Exeter City will play Fluminense in Brazil on July 20 next year

City, on a tour of South America in 1914, lost 2-0 to a team of the best players the country had to offer in Llaranjeiras Stadium - a squad now officially accepted as the first Brazilian national team.

And on July 20, 2014, 100 years to the weekend after the first meeting and seven days after the 2014 World Cup final, Exeter and Fluminense will recreate the historic match in the same stadium - kicking off with the ball used back in 1914 and wearing kits based on the originals.

"The confirmation that once again Exeter City will play in Brazil represents another page in our club's fascinating history," Exeter's chief executive Julian Tagg said. "Its an absolute pleasure to be providing our supporters and the whole city of Exeter with the chance to be part of such a unique event.

"This event has been three years in the making and a huge amount of work has gone on behind the scenes.

"Fluminense is a major sporting club at a world level with a rich tapestry of achievements behind them, and so for Exeter to be part of that history and recognised as such is something every true lover of our wonderful game should cherish."

The club is looking into the possibility of playing another one or two games in the country around July 20 as well as arranging packages for supporters wishing to travel, and they have also confirmed that Fluminense will cover the flight and accommodation costs of the City squad.

Exeter marked their own centenary by taking on the Brazilian Masters in 2004, a side that included the likes of Dunga and Careca, and their current third kit for the 2013/14 campaign is yellow.

In January 2012 Tagg, along with the club's business development manager Bruce Henderson, travelled to Brazil to meet Fluminense officials and the club have worked hard to arrange a friendly which looks set to capture the attention of supporters in both countries.
