Forest have been keeping an eye on Nottingham-born Darikwa, who still lives in the city, since he came to the attention of Reds boss Billy Davies during a pre-season friendly against the Spireites in July.
The Sky Bet Championship club have sent scouts to the Proact Stadium a handful of times and a Forest representative is also pencilled in to attend Chesterfield's Johnstone's Paint Trophy tie at Mansfield on Tuesday night.
Should the 21-year-old play in the second-round clash, injuries could see him deployed at right-back - the position in which he began his career.
Forest have been in contact with the League Two leaders but have not made an offer for the player who was raised a stone's throw from the City Ground in the West Bridgford area of Nottingham.
The right winger was on Everton's radar last season. The Barclays Premier League club watched him on more than half a dozen occasions around the turn of the year, during which time he was in a rich vein of form and was named the Football League Young Player of the Month for December.
Darikwa, who had spells at both Forest and Notts County as a junior, joined Chesterfield when he was aged 16. Last November he signed a contract extension until 2015.
