The Barnsley-born hitman, who spent the majority of his career with the South Yorkshire club, making more than 300 appearances and scoring 128 goals, could not hide his joy over a long-awaited return.

"I'm delighted. I've been trying for a couple of years to get some involvement but it didn't come to fruition," Hirst told a Sheffield-based newspaper.

"Then the academy changed and Dean Ramsdale (academy manager) got involved. Dean asked me if I'd be interested and obviously my answer was yes."

Hirst made three appearances for his country, scoring one goal in a friendly match against New Zealand, and Ramsdale was on hand to offer clarification as to the former striker's new role at the club.

He said: "He will help with recruitment and player and parent liaison to ensure we utilise his expertise and experience."
