In the final moments visiting defender Dale Tonge was sent off for a second yellow card and the Shrimps almost took advantage when, with virtually the last kick of the game, substitute Joe McGee hit the post following a swift counter attack.
Knill said: "We were poor in the first half and I was really glad when half time came because we could have been even further behind to be honest.
"Our first-half performance was not acceptable really but we were much better in the second half. We scored at a perfect time with a great goal from Karl and could have gone on to win the game from there because I thought we were the better side.
"We had a much higher tempo and caused them a lot of problems and it was a game that could have gone either way.
"It's two games and two draws now and we have a full week to work on team shape and increasing our tempo, and if we play like we did in the second half for 90 minutes we definitely have a side that can compete."
