Football - O'Brien wants repeat performance

West Ham's Joey O'Brien hopes to retain his place at left-back in Saturday's trip to Newcastle after being given the nod for the season opener against Cardiff.

The Irishman, selected ahead of summer signing Razvan Rat, was part of a Hammers back four which kept a clean sheet in the 2-0 defeat of the newly-promoted Welshmen.

Now O'Brien is targeting a repeat showing of the win at St James' Park last term, when he set-up the winner for former Newcastle captain Kevin Nolan.

"I was delighted to get the nod (against Cardiff)," O'Brien told West Ham TV.

"Roland is a smashing player and George McCartney is on his way back as well, so hopefully I can stay there or whoever comes in can play well."

"It (Newcastle) is a very hard place to go, but we'd take what happened last season and if Kev could score again that would be great.

"We're going up there setting off to keep a clean sheet and we'll see how we go from there.

"That will be aim and hopefully we can defend the way we did against Cardiff and get a result."
