The Pilgrims came from behind on two occasions thanks to a brace from Lewis Alessandra, but Birmingham defender Kyle Bartley scored in extra time to send the Blues into the second round.

Sheridan praised the goalscoring display of Alessandra. He said: "I have never seen him score goals like those he scored against Birmingham.

"To be honest I have not seen many players score any better goals than the first one scored. When we were together at Oldham he showed glimpses of his ability.

"He was excellent against Birmingham and hopefully this will give him confidence to score more goals in the future.

"The performance was a big plus for me. The players responded really well.

"To come back from behind on two occasions showed character and that was particularly pleasing for me."
