Nathan Smith has been out since March with injury

The defender's season was cut short by an ankle injury sustained against Oxford in March but he is making good progress towards his comeback.

Smith, 26, told the club's official website: "Rehab is going well, the cast is off. I start running next week so they said just take it slowly and I'll be fine for pre-season.

"I was doing everything to try and prevent any injuries, which was working, but one thing I couldn't prevent was a fracture."

Smith will hope to return in the left-back position for a pre-season campaign which involves visits from Championship sides Nottingham Forest and Huddersfield to the Proact Stadium.
