Frankie Edgar Put Title Shot to the Side to Fight Urijah Faber
To wait or not wait for a UFC title shot is a question top contenders must answers at one point or another. Waiting has paid off for some, but sitting out has also backfired for others.
No. 2-ranked featherweight and former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar could have sat back and waited to face the winner of the fight between titleholder Jose Aldo and Conor McGregor, who square of at UFC 189 this summer, but opted to accept a fight against Urijah Faber instead.
“I had to take a year off from fighting to do The Ultimate Fighter show. This is not something I enjoy too much. I’m 33 years old and I don’t want to kind of waste any time just sitting on the sideline waiting for stuff to happen,” said Edgar during a recent press conference.
Edgar coached a team on The Ultimate Fighter 19 opposite B.J. Penn. He defeated the former two-division UFC champion for a third time during the reality show’s season finale, but a year has passed since he had last fought heading into the match-up.

Edgar is done waiting for things to play out in the 145-pound division and accepted a bout agreement to face Faber on May 16 in the featured bout of the promotion’s first event in the Philippines.
“If I’m the No. 1 guy, there’s really no one I can fight that can make me any higher. I think Urijah is the biggest name I could fight. It’s an exciting fight that the fans want to see, so let’s give it to them,” Edgar said.
UFC Fight Night 66: Edgar vs. Faber takes place at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay, Philippines on May 16.
