Georgi Karakhanyan Returns to Bellator to Take Care of Unfinished Business
After spending the last two years with World Series of Fighting, former promotional featherweight champion Georgi Karakhanyan has returned to Bellator in 2015.
One of the main reasons he opted to sign with Bellator was the lack of activity he had last year.
“I didn’t fight a lot at all,” Karakhanyan told MMAWeekly.com. “I only fought two rounds in 2014.
“You can look at all the bad things, like my fight last year (against Rick Glenn), but I spent a lot of quality time with my daughter and trained a lot.”
Karakhanyan’s loss of his title to Glenn in June came due to an injury suffered early in the fight that he could not overcome and was eventually forced to retire because of.
“When we went to the ground, somehow I landed on (Glenn’s) knee and my cartilage was torn,” said Karakhanyan. “I tried to go into the second round and do my best, but when the doctor came (between rounds) and put his hand on my ribs, I wanted to tell my corner that I couldn’t breathe.
“Sometimes things happen that you can’t do anything about, so you’ve just to understand that things happen. All I can do is train and get ready for this year.”
When Karakhanyan (23-4-1) returns to the promotion at Bellator 132 on Jan. 16, he’ll face Bubba Jenkins (8-1) in a fight that could turn out to be a title eliminator.
“I feel like the match-up with Bubba is a very good match-up because overall he’s a good fighter,” said Karakhanyan. “I’ve trained with him before and I know he’s a great wrestler. My hands are going to be full on Jan. 16.”
Now that he’s back with Bellator, Karakhanyan wants to make an impact in the promotion that he was not able to achieve the first time around.
“I have some unfinished business since my fight with Patricio (Freire at Bellator 37 in 2011),” said Karakhanyan. “We’ll see after this fight who they give me next, but I’m just happy to be with such a great organization like Bellator, especially under Scott Coker.
“This is a very tough match-up and I’m not going to underestimate Bubba. I’m taking every fight seriously, one fight at a time.”
