New Zealand had no answer to Rangana Herath as the Sri Lanka bowler took four wickets in the morning session to reduce the visitors to 96 for eight in the first Test in Galle.
Having resumed on 13 for one, the Black Caps lost seven wickets for just 61 runs to reach lunch on 96 for eight - a lead of just 70.
At the close of play on Sunday they had moved nine ahead of Sri Lanka's first innings total of 247 but the removal of Brendon McCullum last night for just 13 by Herath proved to be an ominous portent for New Zealand.
