American Baze, 54, racked up another four wins in California, the final victory aboard Handful of Pearls seeing him reach the landmark.

"I'm glad to get it out of the way," said Baze."I knew it was really close. That other filly had the momentum, but my filly was running with her neck stretched out. I would have settled for a dead heat."

Victory brings Baze closer to his main competitor at the top, Brazilian Jorge Ricardo.

His young compatriot Zayas - aged just 19 - reached 101 career wins after his weekend in Florida.
