The well-known American trainer could barley have hoped for more than Strong Mandate’s win at Saratoga Race Course early in the week.
Although they were in a tussle with several horses as they came out of the bend, Jose Ortiz and his mount put in a sudden and lethal burst of acceleration to win by almost 10 lengths in the Group 1 contested on a waterlogged track.
Luis Saez came second on Casiguapo, and Juan Leyva third on Lunarwarfare.
It was Strong Mandate’s second win in three starts.
