Miroslav Klose scored what turned out to be the winning goal as Lazio narrowly beat AC Milan 3-2 in Rome in their Serie A clash.

The German put Lazio 3-0 up early in the second half with a delicate right-footed volley from inside the Milan area, adding to two first half goals from Hernanes and Antonio Candreva. Candreva's thunderbolt from 25 yards out will go down as one of the goals of the season so far but despite Lazio's advantage they only just held off a spirited fight from Milan.

Nigel De Jong managed to guide in a cross from Urby Emanuelson with half an hour to go and Stephan El Shaarawy made it two with a great right-footed strike from inside the area with just under 15 minutes remaining.

AC Milan went into the fixture in Rome with just two wins this season, having scored just seven goals in seven games. Lazio on the other hand had had a strong start to the season with five wins and two draws from seven games.

With just 25 minutes gone Lazio made their mark on the match with a great individual effort from Hernanes. Having beaten Daniele Bonera, the Brazilian then struck a right-footed shot from just outside the Milan penalty area which deflected off the defender and went beyond the reach of goalkeeper Marco Amelia.

Milan had a chance to make things equal straight away through El Shaarawy, who took the ball around Albano Bizzarri and looked set to score. His shot failed to cross the line however thanks to a great block from Andre Dias who dived in front of the strike to keep it 1-0 to Lazio.

AC were punished soon after thanks to a thunderbolt of a strike from Candreva. The 25-year-old picked the ball up 25 yards out and unleashed a dipping, swerving shot that thundered into the top left-hand corner of the goal. Amelia could not get anywhere near it such was the quality of the strike.

Early in the second half Klose managed to put Lazio 3-0 up and put the game almost out of reach, yet although the momentum seemed to be all with Lazio, Milan were not quite ready to give up.

Emanuelson was brought on by coach Massimiliano Allegri and immediately made an impact on the right-hand side of the pitch. His left-footed crosses began to carve through the Lazio defence and when he whipped a free-kick in from the right he managed to find De Jong outstretched on the six-yard box to poke it into the back of the net.

The pressure began to build for Lazio and when El Shaarawy struck his right-footed effort into the bottom right corner of Bizzarri's goal an AC Milan comeback looked on the cards.

It was too little too late for Milan though who were unable to snatch a third goal and take things level. Milan are still in 11th place following the defeat while Lazio are just one point behind second-place Napoli in Serie A.
