Jacare Undergoes Second Elbow Surgery, Awaits UFC Title Shot
Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza, believed to be the next UFC middleweight contender, reportedly underwent his second successful elbow surgery of the year on Tuesday.
Souza’s manager, Gilberto Faria, told MMAFighting.com that his fighter underwent a successful two-hour surgery at Hospital São Lucas in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Tuesday’s surgery was to alleviate a condition called ulnar neuropathy, which was a caused by the ulnar nerve in Souza’s right elbow being entrapped. The condition caused numbness and tingling into the fourth and fifth fingers, according to the report.
He had surgery on his left elbow earlier this year in March to remove bone fragments.
Souza is currently on a seven-fight winning streak, including a submission of Gegard Mousasi in between the two surgeries.
He is currently awaiting a shot at the UFC middleweight championship currently wrapped around Chris Weidman’s waist. Weidman first has a date with Vitor Belfort, which has already been rescheduled several times, and is now expected to take place in early 2015, about the same time Souza should be able to return.
