Demetrious Johnson scored a unanimous decision victory over Ian McCall as the UFC returned to Florida for the first time in five years.

Johnson’s victory in three rounds over McCall at the BankAtlnatic Center earns him a title fight against Joseph Benavidez in the UFC’s first 125-pound championship.

“McCall was the toughest fighter I faced in the UFC,” said Johnson after just his second fight at 125 pounds. He usually fights at 135.

“Tougher than all the guys I fought at 135.”

The fight was scored 29-28, 30-27 and 29-28 by the three judges in Johnson’s favour.

The bout was a rematch from March when a “scoring error” meant the two were awarded a controversial draw in Australia.

Johnson was originally declared the winner before the scoring error was discovered that should have sent the fight into a tie-breaking fourth round, leading to the match being declared a draw.

There was no doubt in Florida, however, Johnson dominating the first and third rounds and holding off McCall in a more evenly matched second round.

Earlier in the evening, the first of four televised fights saw Eddie Wineland record a knockout victory, courtesy of an overhand right, over Scott Jorgensen in the second round in their bantamweight bout.

Welterweight Mike Pyle managed to stop Josh Neer with an overhand right despite fighting with his back on the canvas, recording a knockout victory in the first round, while Erick Silva defeated Charlie Brennenman by rear choke, also in the first round, in another welterweight fight.
