Jon Jones Doesn’t Want to Talk About Heavyweight, but Would Fight Cain Velasquez in a Heartbeat

When a fighter is regularly asked about changing weight classes, it usually means they’re either on a losing skid or they’ve cleared out a division. For UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones, it’s the latter.

After defending his title for a record eighth time on Saturday by defeating Daniel Cormier by unanimous decision, Jones was again asked about the possibility of going up a the heavyweight division.

“Fighting at heavyweight would surely be to entertain the fans and it would have to be against the perfect opponent,” said the 27-year-old champion.

When asked about a potential match-up against Cormier’s training partner and UFC heavyweight titleholder Cain Velasquez, Jones was open to the possibility.

“To be honest, I would fight Cain Velasquez in a heartbeat. I really would. I would love to fight AKA’s best athletes and I believe I would beat them all. I believe that our team is the best team in the world,” said the Jackson’s MMA-trained fighter.

Jones considers himself a true light heavyweight and has no plans to vacate the division anytime soon. If he were to accept a bout at heavyweight, it would likely be a superfight type of situation rather than a permanent move.

“Making 205 is not a challenge for me at all. It hasn’t been a challenge for me. For a long time I’ve been criticized for being too big for my weight class. And I think it’s an excuse of people who don’t understand my success. I’m not too big for the light heavyweight division,” said Jones. “I am built the way that I’m built. I have very skinny legs. But I make weight just fine. So I am a true light heavyweight. I will be a light heavyweight for a long time.

“I really don’t even want to talk about heavyweight anymore. I’m making weight pretty good at light heavyweight,” added the champion. “And when I do go to heavyweight, it will be something me and Dana (White) talk about. And we’ll have the right opponent, and it will be for the right purse.”

Jones is expected to face the winner of the Jan. 26 UFC on Fox 14 main event between Alexander Gustafsson and Anthony Johnson in his next outing.
